Astrology – A New Version Is Astrology a pseudo-science as many learned people opine these days? Many of the people whom I meet ask me this question as one who has been researching on this subject for the last five decades or so. My answer to this question is an emphatic ‘Yes’ looking at the way it is being practiced these days by professionals. It is not an empirical science though it is interpreted based on calculations based on empirical formula and logical axioms passed on to us from time immemorial by the ancient sages who perhaps were even capable of time travel. I must say it is a divine science the logic of which though not rationale sometimes are very accurate and can be used as an excellent road sign in our journey through life. After reading through my articles in this you can place yourselves in the scheme of God's plans by comparing your strengths of houses based on your birth details with that of others including certain celebrities and some of the divinities incarnated as human beings . To start with, let me tell you that Astrology is not a predictive science and you cannot predict your future using astrology. If anybody tells you so, you must immediately discount his knowledge to be a very superficial one. God has created us in his own image and He resides within each of us to carry out His assignments intended to be done using our body and soul. Astrology can only give you a blueprint of your life and prediction of individual incidents is only done by fake astrologers. At best astrology can only be used to evaluate our horoscope based on your date, time and place of birth. Each one of us has different definitions about the qualities of life like Health, Wealth, Happiness, Education, a Good career, Marital bliss, Luck etc. We are all unique in our creations and no two living beings are identical in nature or spirit. The fact that you were born indicate that you have to neutralise some of the bad karma you had done in earlier lives and therefore life will be a mixture of Good and Bad and none can expect a life of continued happiness throughout your tenure in this world. If you can digest the above, then read on. Our destinies are decided by a cosmic roll of the dice, the winds of the stars, the vagrant breezes of fortune that blow from the windmills of the Gods. We are not sure what will happen tomorrow and what is going to happen to us in the future. Logic has no place in deciding these factors. For all that it matters no science is perfect. Medical science on which we depend a lot is constantly changing and what was being prescribed for a given disease 10 years before is no more used and some of them are even banned by the FDA. Researches show that what we thought was good for a disease is no more true and new medicines take its place. Cancer was thought to be incurable once upon a time and today we need not be unduly worried about it, there are cures and treatments available or at least relief is available to alleviate the sufferings of a cancerous patient. All these indicate that science is developing and is contributing to the well-being of everyone. So is Astrology. Today with the advent of computers and internet, Astrology is slowly becoming a developing science. Till 1970, to prepare a full horoscope of a native, it used to take as much as 80 man hours by an Astrologer and today we can do it in just about 4 seconds using a computer. And that too with all the axioms available in Astrological text books fully incorporated and the strengths and weaknesses of the all the planets and their effect on human life born on a given date, given time at a given place. The fundamental principle of Astrology is that there will be no two births at the same date and time at a given longitude and latitude. Earlier astrologers had to depend on their knowledge, memory of thousands of axioms pertaining to varying planetary positions of a horoscope to try to interpret a horoscope which many a times could go wrong due to non-availability of mathematical units of strengths of planets and houses. Predictions were mainly done depending on the mood of the astrologer and what he could recollect from the relevant axioms pertaining to different combinations of planetary positions at birth. If one goes to an astrologer, 4 he used to give different predictions at different times and the public had lost credibility in the astrologer’s predictions. Today the accuracy in the calculations are guaranteed with the help of computers and most of the results are available in absolute values. The computer gives the same strengths of planets and houses whenever the same data is fed into the computers using astrological software. So the mathematical calculations always yielded the same results for a given horoscope irrespective of the moods of the astrologer. What has this brought about? The mathematical part of a horoscope is always correct and your logical understandings or evaluations of these figures only matter in attempting predictions. In short Astrology has today become just like a company’s balance sheet as is being analyzed by a Chartered accountant. The figures in the Balance sheet gives the reader an idea about the company’s assets and liabilities and the profit they make product wise period wise and can well compare the health of the company with reference to the health of other peer companies operating in a similar way. So if you can trust a Chartered Accountant, you could also trust an Astrologer today. Not that all Chartered Accountants can be trusted. Now let us see how a Horoscope compares to a Balance Sheet of a company. The Assets and Liabilities part in a Horoscope is the Strength of Planets (There are nine of them) determined by the Shadbalas (Six types of strengths) of Planets and Bhavabalas (Strength of the 12 houses or zodiacal signs) duly moderated for malefic/benefic natures of the planets and their inter-intra relationships and the residential strength of the planets in the respective houses. There is a minimum strength required for each house or bhava for satisfactory performance which can be graded in percentages. A pass mark will be say 30%. Generally the strength of the planets will be in a 15% to 100% range since no planet can have a 100% strength in a human horoscope except under exceptional circumstances like in the horoscopes of great saints, do-gooders philanthropists and few other personalities which are very rare. Similarly the lowest strength of a planet will never be less than 15%. Like there will be none without some happiness at all. Even a good for nothing fellow will have some times in his life when he will be happy and cheerful. Is it not? There is an school of thought that human body consists of three layers the innermost one of them is God himself and around him an astral body enclosed in the physical form of flesh and blood. God works as an operating system like Windows or Linux and looks after that nothing goes wrong and it is He who keeps the body fit and regenerative and protects all from diseases. The astral layer provides the reflexes and protects you from impending dangers and directs us as per the desire of God. And to protect us all He provides you half your life time when you are either in sleep or daydreaming during which time you will be happy oblivious of what is happening around. It is when you are awake and doing your Karma that you feel the miseries of life which drives us to deviate from the God ordered path using your Free Will and astrology is provided as a blue print of your Karma to warn us beforehand about possible problems we will have to face in the forward march of our life. The twelve Houses of the Horoscope The twelve houses of the horoscope which represents 12 different groups of characteristics of life like for example the 7th house represents marital bliss, the 4th house represents mental happiness 10th house that of Career/Profession etc. is what Astrology is all about and the potency of each of the houses could be determined in a mathematical unit in percentages. Normally each house should have a minimum of 30% strength for a pass mark and again the range will be from 15 to 100 percentage and sometimes even higher in certain few cases of aberrations in the horoscope. These strengths will be indicative of how good or bad the houses are and their signification thereof. All these will give you an idea of how successful or otherwise will be the native with respect to the matters connected with the house. 5 Similar to periodical Reports in Accounts, a span of 120 years of human life is divided into nine main periods, each period overlooked by a Planet. Each period is further subdivided to 9 sub periods and so on till the time taken by a human for each breath in his life. The combined effect of the strength of the period lord and sub period lord, sub sub periods etc. will give you a clue as to how that particular period and sub periods within will be, whether good or bad and the net strength thereof which can be fruitfully used to initiate appropriate ventures which are likely to turn good or otherwise. Thus you will see that the horoscope if prepared accurately and with the help of strengths of planets and houses, a human being can be forewarned about the future just like road signs help the motorist in their journey. I am giving below a sample of a new mathematical way of evaluating a horoscope very similar to the Mark Sheets we receive from Board of Examinations or a University on completion of a course. Self Analysis% is the Average Marks scored for the significations of the house, Aaroodha Analysis is the Marks given by Public and Naked Analysis is Lowest Mark possible below which it will not go in the 6 entire period of Life. Human life is never static and there will be good and bad periods interspersed throughout and getting an empirical idea about such periods will definitely help us. The third column titled “Self analysis %” is the mean strength of the houses based on one’s own assessment of himself or his success factor of the significations of the houses as an average for the entire period of life. But others may view him differently since we always wear a mask and do not expose ourselves fully in front of others. The fourth column titled “Aaroodha Analysis" shows this strength as is understood by others viewing him which normally is an inflated figure and on rare occasions it will be a deflated figure when the individual is an open personality who exposes himself with all humbleness to others and is not a pretender. The column titled "Naked Strength%" which indicates the strength below which it will never go in the entire period of one's life. We can also compute transitory influence of planets which I will explain in detail in one of my later article "How to evaluate a Horoscope - Technical Details". At this juncture, I would like to emphasize that having a good net strength for a horoscope does not indicate the he will be proportionately rich and fabulous in life with possession of a large amount of wealth in the form of properties or bank balance. I have found many fabulously rich people have only a moderate or below moderate strengths for their horoscope. This is because they are/were not happy in their life due to various reasons despite having a lot of money. The net strength therefore indicates one’s measure of happiness in life which need not necessarily be connected only with having lot of wealth or assets. Happiness comes only with a proper mix of health, wealth, marital life, happiness from children, having no enemies, a good career and a bit of spiritual knowledge etc. In this materialistic world, we have a tendency to associate happiness with money which is totally wrong. There are many kings and Presidents of countries who had a poor strength for their horoscope and though they held high power and esteem from others, had a very unhappy life of their own with no happiness in most desired qualities in life. The net strength here in this example quoted above means that this native will be happy 45.77% of his life and the rest of the time, he wouldn’t be that happy. Or you can say that the overall success factor of his life would be to the extent of 45.77% which would fluctuate from 36.34% (Naked Strength) to 55.2%. What each house signifies is given below : The first House: (The house of Self), The ascendant, Lagna. This is the most important house in the chart and plays an important role right throughout the life of an individual. It represents the physical stature, complexion, form and shape of an individual, the health, vigour, vitality and natural tendencies, personality, jest for life, honour, dignity, well being, upper part of the face, longevity and start in life. The second House: (The house of wealth) All money matters are governed by this house. Fortune, profits and gains, power and resources, security, material achievements , jewellery, shares, Security, speech, eyes, vision, stocks and bonds, precious stones, memory, Education, tongue, nose teeth, chin and family are signified by this house. This is also a maraka sthana or a death inflicting house. The third House: (The house of courage and siblings) The mental intellect and disposition is governed by this house. Courage and the ability to achieve things and complete the tasks, Relationships with brothers and sisters, assistance or otherwise from them, 7 Relations with neighbours, valour, short travels, communications and transport, correspondence, writing, change of residence, contracts, agreements, rumours, hands, throat, shoulder blade, collar bones, arms and nervous system are some other things that this house gives information about. The fourth House: (Mother’s house and Mental Happiness) Mother, native place, residence, domestic environment, secret life, luxury, vehicles, fields, pastures, farms, orchards, mines, buildings, houses, ancestral property, hidden treasure, higher education, wells, water, milk, ponds, lakes etc. are signified by this house. The fifth house: (The house of progeny, romance and competition) Progeny, whether one will have children or not, inclination, recreation, pleasure, artistic talents, entertainment and amusement, sports, excelling in competitive activities likes crosswords, cards, games of chance, gambling or betting, love affairs, ambassadors, good or bad morals, mantra, tantra, religious mindedness, high learning and wisdom, enormous riches, spiritual practices etc. are indicated by this house. The sixth house: (The house of indebtedness, enemy and diseases) Diseases which restrict our freedom of movement, indebtedness to others, nursing, food, services, employees, sub ordinates or servants, debts, cattle, tenants, jealousy, enemies, maternal uncles, mental anguish are represented by this house. This is one of the Dusthanas indicative of bad things in life. The Seventh House: (The house of marriage and partnerships) Earthly ties and unions, legal bondage, spouse, partners in business, conjugal life, litigation, influence in foreign countries, success and reputation in foreign travels, dangers in life, Relationship with spouse, gains or losses after marriage, type of spouse and his or her physical and mental disposition are all looked into by studying this house. The eighth House : (The house of Distress and Death) Longevity and span of life, inheritance, legacy, wills, insurance, gratuity, accidents, fire, suicide, misery, misfortune, sorrow, strife, worries, disgrace, delay, dejection, disappointment, loss, obstruction, theft and robbery etc. are all signified by this house. This is another Dusthana connected with distress or death. The ninth House: (The house of Luck, Fate and Fortune): What this house signifies are Luck, Faith, wisdom, divine worship, pilgrimages, philosophy, fortune, religious disposition, meditation, intuition, sacrifices and charity, father, Teacher or Guru, learning and teaching, dreams and visions, long journeys, air and sea travel, higher education oversea, Thighs. The tenth House: (The house of Career/Profession) Honour, dignity, public esteem, power and prestige, credit and recognition received for a task completed, success and status, rank and renown, respect and fame, ambition, authority, Job satisfaction, promotion, advancement in Job, appointments, Government, political power, honour from Government and Knees are indicated by this house. The eleventh house: (The house of casual incomes and gains) 8 Friends, society, community, favourites, ambitions and wish fulfillment, gain of wealth, success in undertakings, incoming wealth, prosperity, elder brothers, recovery from illness, dawn of fortune, ankles are the significations of the 11th house. The twelfth house: (The house of expenses and Losses) Losses and impediments, restraint and limitation, waste and extravagance, expenses whether good or bad, deception, investments and donations, charity, misery and misfortune, sorrow and sin, secret enemies, involvement in scandals, disgrace and insults, secret sorrows. Success through occult affairs, the feet, left eye, left ear, bed pleasures, life and activities in foreign places are signified. This is also a Dusthana (A bad House). Our success factor in each of the 12 houses and its significations can well be ascertained using the strength table. For example in the above horoscope the career house, the 10th house has a strength of 45.86% which means his job satisfaction will be to the tune of around 45.86% only and the returns he gets from his career represented by the 11th house would be equivalent to 41.94% of the amount of work he puts in. The best example you can find is in corrupt politicians who generally have a weaker horoscope of less than 50% if he has to succeed in this era of Kaliyuga. They hide from the public what they really are and can well be found out by looking at their net strength as opposed to their usually high Aaroodha strength (Marks given by Public). I am not suggesting that all politicians are bad, but most of them have a very poor horoscope and they little hesitate to hoodwink the public for their own welfare in this era. The Dasa (Period) and Antardasas (Sub Periods) can also be evaluated thus based on the planetary strengths which will be more meaningful to comprehend. Another area where these mathematical analysis of horoscopes can help is in the Human Resources, Personnel Departments of Organizations to establish compatibility of horoscopes between any two or more individuals where they work for a common goal. Needless to say these can be used for finding out the compatibility of partners involved in any venture. Marriage is an ideal example of a partnership between two individuals. Isn’t so? A sample of a horoscope compatibility report used for establishing marriage compatibility in India and many Hindu families is given below just to give an idea how they match in respect of all the 12 houses of a zodiacal chart. Different people have their own view points in what they look forward to in their partners which can well be analysed using this report. This is particularly important these days when the incidence of divorces and separations in marriage are very common leading to untold miseries to their offsprings. Horoscope Matching Compatibility Report House Male Female Male To Female Female to Male Match % Remarks 1st (Personality, Individuality) 75.14 107.60 69.83 143.20 67.54 BelowAverage 2nd (Wealth, assets, family, speech) 77.55 81.27 95.42 104.80 96.28 Outstanding 3rd (Younger co-borns, confidants, courage) 70.32 82.21 85.54 116.90 88.11 VeryGood 4th (happiness, comforts, pleasures) 69.03 100.56 68.65 145.66 68.48 BelowAverage 9 5th (Children, intelligence, mind) 56.58 87.49 64.67 154.64 69.08 BelowAverage 6th (Debts, Diseases, Enemies) 68.55 64.48 106.32 94.06 95.93 Outstanding 7th (Marital Happiness) 58.59 97.45 60.12 166.33 61.14 BelowAverage 8th (Longevity, Distresses) 71.53 78.68 90.91 110.00 92.84 Excellent 9th (Luck ,Fortune) 66.54 75.78 87.81 113.88 90.76 Excellent 10th (Career, Profession, Job Satisfaction) 62.20 85.11 73.09 136.82 77.09 Satisfactory 11th (Gains, Returns from Career) 74.42 63.75 116.73 85.67 89.33 VeryGood 12th (Wasteful Expenditure, Losses) 59.71 94.13 63.44 157.64 65.58 BelowAverage Net Strength 67.51 84.88 81.88 127.47 82.64 Good Match Grading : <75 - Below Average or Unsatisfactory >=75 but <80 - Satisfactory >=80 but <85 - Good >=85 but <90 - Very Good >=90 but <95 - Excellent >=95 - Outstanding. The Male to Female compatibility and Female to Male Compatibility and the overall compatibility of 82.64% indicate that the horoscopes match with a 'Good' grading. In case of compatibility reports, a minimum of 75% is considered necessary for successful partnerships. 80 to 85 match can be considered Good, 86 to 90 can be Very Good, 90 to 95 Excellent and above 95% as outstanding. A whole new look at the above will definitely achieve better usage of Astrology in our daily life reducing unwanted tensions and mental agony enlightening oneself in spiritual studies rather than getting mired into the materialistic realm of the present days. The main advantage of this unique system of evaluation of horoscope using strength percentages (Marks Scored) is that it could be used in all school of thoughts in Astrology including the Sayana system used in the Western world. The variations in strength will be only to the extent of a few decimal places. And using Astrological calculations it is possible to identify the best day and the worst day between any two given dates, months or years as you wish. But it takes quite a lot of time in front of the computers without loss of concentration which tires the astrologer's mind. The definition of Best and Worst is individualistic depending on his moods, temperaments, outlook etc. Tables like the ones given below help such calculations. You can attribute the nature and extent of Periods and sub periods using the following table. This assumes that we are awake in mind only for 12 hours of a day i.e 50% of a day. The rest of the time we are either sleeping soundly or our mind is at rest possibly day dreaming. In other words everyone will be happy during their sleepy state of mind. The mentally alert time is affected by the percentages as shown in this particular sample example. Take care there are times when planets are lifeless and that is why the figures of Good% and Bad% do not sum up to 100%. During such interval you will have a impartial state of mind. The planetary dispositions of the planets can also be summarized as given in the following table. 10 Planet Residential Strength Good% Bad% Lifeless Nature Sun 53.43 23.09 22.59 54.31 Benefic Moon 69.10 15.46 45.64 38.91 Malefic Mars 51.35 21.30 14.57 64.13 Benefic Mercury 11.07 5.66 5.41 88.93 Benefic Jupiter 88.03 81.64 4.97 13.40 Benefic Venus 75.37 38.50 21.47 40.03 Benefic Saturn 5.69 3.70 0.86 95.44 Benefic Rahu 61.15 31.27 29.88 38.85 Benefic Kethu 61.15 56.71 3.45 39.84 Benefic Net 52.93 30.81 16.54 52.65 Benefic In the articles which follow I will be evaluating the horoscopes of Narendra Modi, Barack Obama, Hitler, Lord Rama and Lord Krishna etc. to aid in understanding the techniques detailed above. Perhaps you can compare your own horoscope evaluations with that of the above and get to know where you stand in your own happiness in life. Astrology is a divine science as is Medical science. Both should not be used to make money since none can guarantee success in both the professions to anyone since results are totally dependent on one’s own fate or destiny. However it is believed that these sciences will come to fruition only if the recipient reciprocates the consultant with a Dakshina or donation depending upon one’s own abilities in any form either in kind or in cash as is mentioned in Vedas which should not be demanded either in quality or quantity by the Consultants. Unfortunately who gives free consultation these days? *********** 11 Chapter 2 : Scientific Evaluation of a Horoscope using Computer Software To a layman, a horoscope is nothing but a chart drawn on a piece of paper using 12 boxes generally drawn in a square as is illustrated below. You will also come across charts drawn in a circular shape. Does it make any sense to you? No, obviously not, unless you have some knowledge of Astrology and have seen such charts before. This is an example of a horoscope chart of a person born on February 19, 2014 at Calicut, Kerala, India at 11:54:54 a.m. You will see the longitude and latitude of the place of birth given in the centre of the chart. On the right is given how it is drawn slightly different from the one on the left. Either way, it does not make any sense to the uninitiated in Astrology. In this article I am trying to discuss how you can get some meaning out of these charts together with some additional information needed to evaluate them. There are twelve inner squares along the brim of the outer square. The Central square is used to identify the date, time and place of birth of the native whose chart is being drawn. These squares from the top second are called Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. This chart shows the placement of the 9 planets and the Ascendant. Sun is denoted by Su, Moon is denoted by Mo, Mars by Ma, Mercury by Me, Venus by Ve, Jupiter by Ju, Saturn by Sa, Rahu by Ra and Kethu by Ke. There are few more like AL for Arudha Lagna, HL for Hora Lagna and GL for Ghati Lagna which are used for special purposes. Planets in brackets show that they are in retrograde motion. In some other forms of astrology, these abbreviations could be in the local language or using symbols. The entire Zodiac is 360 degrees which are further sub divided into 12 signs which are each of 30 degrees. So if a planet is placed in a sign, it shows in which 30 degree segment they are in, an 12 approximate address you can call it. The exact place where the planet is in the zodiac is the longitude of that planet. This approximate position of planets in a sign of 30 degrees is further subdivided into 9 and shown in another chart with accuracies of 3 degree 20 minutes which is called Navamsa Chart in Vedic Astrology. I am not going into details of those extensions of the Birth Chart as we will no more need them for evaluations of the horoscope using software produced results which are more in depth than the manual calculations of evaluations hitherto being followed by traditional astrologers doing the mathematics involved by hand and therefore prone to errors and very time consuming too. What an Astrological software primarily does to start with is to calculate the longitudes of all planets at the given time, date and place of birth as shown below. Body Longitude Nakshatra Pada Rasi Navamsa Lagna 3 Ta 10' 07.54" Krit 2 Ta Cp Sun 6 Aq 20' 37.52" Dhan 4 Aq Sc Moon 25 Vi 38' 45.55" Chit 1 Vi Le Mars 2 Li 58' 53.72" Chit 3 Li Li Mercury 25 Cp 39' 58.28" Dhan 1 Cp Le Jupiter (R) 17 Ge 51' 25.54" Ardr 4 Ge Pi Venus 22 Sg 06' 46.58" PSha 3 Sg Li Saturn 27 Li 44' 16.45" Visa 3 Li Ge Rahu 9 Li 59' 49.72" Swat 1 Li Sg Ketu 9 Ar 59' 49.72" Aswi 3 Ar Ge Maandi 4 Ta 03' 29.39" Krit 3 Ta Aq Gulika 22 Ar 35' 19.18" Bhar 3 Ar Li Rahu and Kethu are known as North Node and South Node in Western astrology. The names of Nakshatra are abbreviated and the details are available on the internet if you goodle for “Nakshatras”. Using the Lagna longitude, a Bhava table is produced as below where you will observe that the Cusp is always the same longitude of degrees in each of the houses of zodiacal signs. House Start Cusp End Planets in it 1st 18 Ar 10' 07.54" 3 Ta 10' 07.54" 18 Ta 10' 07.54" Asc 2nd 18 Ta 10' 07.54" 3 Ge 10' 07.54" 18 Ge 10' 07.54" Jupiter 3rd 18 Ge 10' 07.54" 3 Cn 10' 07.54" 18 Cn 10' 07.54" 4th 18 Cn 10' 07.54" 3 Le 10' 07.54" 18 Le 10' 07.54" 5th 18 Le 10' 07.54" 3 Vi 10' 07.54" 18 Vi 10' 07.54" 6th 18 Vi 10' 07.54" 3 Li 10' 07.54" 18 Li 10' 07.54" Moon, Mars, Rahu 7th 18 Li 10' 07.54" 3 Sc 10' 07.54" 18 Sc 10' 07.54" Saturn 8th 18 Sc 10' 07.54" 3 Sg 10' 07.54" 18 Sg 10' 07.54" 9th 18 Sg 10' 07.54" 3 Cp 10' 07.54" 18 Cp 10' 07.54" Venus, Pluto 10th 18 Cp 10' 07.54" 3 Aq 10' 07.54" 18 Aq 10' 07.54" Sun, Mer, Ne 11th 18 Aq 10' 07.54" 3 Pi 10' 07.54" 18 Pi 10' 07.54" Uranus 12th 18 Pi 10' 07.54" 3 Ar 10' 07.54" 18 Ar 10' 07.54" Kethu Here you will see where in the bhava chart all planets including Uranus, Neptune and Pluto is positioned. 13 Look at the Bhava Chart which is the heart of a horoscope and evaluations are done based on this chart alone together with the longitudes of planets and the zodiac signs in which they are placed. Using this bhava chart, the software can prepare the strength of Houses which are also known as Bhava Balas in Vedic Astrology which includes Shadbalas of Planets and Directional Strengths and Aspectual strength of planets to various houses which is all encompassing of all axioms available in Vedic Astrology. What you need is a little of mathematical knowledge to understand these strengths. For those weak in Mathematics, this will not be possible to comprehend fully and that is what is the state of most professional astrologers which obviously lead to erroneous evaluations and interpretations of a horoscope and consequent loss of credibility in Astrology. Have a look at the Shad Balas (six types of strengths) of Planets : Planet Shad bala Rupas Sthana Kala Bala Dig Bala Cheshta Bala Drig Bala Natural Bala Sun 8.54 164.41 225.54 58.94 19.78 3.33 60.00 Moon 7.01 169.95 157.46 42.51 43.57 0.81 51.43 Mars 5.83 231.66 34.75 19.94 45.21 1.03 17.14 Mercury 7.76 170.19 185.79 27.50 57.08 0.67 25.70 Jupiter 8.55 170.54 221.72 45.10 44.73 3.35 34.28 Venus 6.71 197.12 103.61 13.69 43.53 1.72 42.85 Saturn 6.88 239.30 70.25 58.19 34.32 2.00 8.57 Rahu 6.71 197.12 103.61 13.69 43.53 1.72 42.85 Kethu 5.83 231.66 34.75 19.94 45.21 1.03 17.14 We are only concerned with the ShadBala (Six Types of strengths) shown in the second column of the respective planets. All other columns contain explanatory values from which the ShadBalas are arrived at. You need not necessarily be an expert in calculating these strengths which the software will do it for 14 you and that is how evaluation of horoscopes are made easier. For those who are interested, the details are available on the internet if you Google “ShadBalas and BhavaBalas”. From these ShadBalas, BhavaBalas are derived at, which is given below. Naturally the software will do it for you taking into consideration all that is needed to be done and there is no need for proficiency in those calculations for you to evaluate a horoscope. The report given below is very similar to a Mark sheet which you receive from Board of Examinations or Universities after the completion of a course of study lasting for several years. And this is the mark sheet used for subjective comparisons for higher studies or for getting an employment. The whole world revolves around comparisons and even our own happiness, wealth and other faculties are measured only by means of comparisons with our peers, neighbours or colleagues. Is it not? Sometimes we might use grading too or a range of values for comparisons like that of a lab report from Medical diagnostic centres. You will now be able to evaluate the strengths of each of the houses which indicate the success factors in matters related to the house, details of which are available in my earlier articles or in the internet if 15 you search for ‘signification of houses in Astrology’. The Grading shows how and where you can place the strengths in such subjective comparisons of the houses. The example cited above is of an average person who is very well known. See how easy it is to evaluate a horoscope and without the help of an astrologer. You will get more information about the inner details in my other articles. And do read my “Day to day predictions in Astrology” to time your events for successful results. The software will provide you with Dasas (Periods) and Anthardasa (Sub Period) and other subdivisions of the Anthardasa which I have explained in the article referenced. If you do not own a software to prepare a horoscope, you can email me the name, date, time and place of birth(nearest city) and I will send you the evaluations, Charts, Periods and sub Periods, the evaluation tables etc. and the explanations thereof a sample of which is given below. A processing fee will have to be paid for doing this. Benefic planets are always good proportionate to its strength. 2. Malefic planets when they are strong reduce the bad effects in proportion to the strength. 3. Weak malefic planets are always bad and can give one a lot of problems. There are three malefic planets Sun, Mercury and Venus which will have a tendency to produce more of ill effects than well manifestations. Mercury is the worst with less strength and a malefic and as per the 3 rd rule above will give maximum problems. Sun and Venus though are malefic have a respectable residential strength and therefore as per Rule 2 above will not be that bad. All the benefic planets during their periods and sub period will do well. What each planet signify is available on Planetary Signification Let us now see how these planetary dispositions affect the 12 houses of your zodiac which is given below. Your horoscope can be rated as close to “High Second Class” grading with a net strength of 58.48%. Using the above I am giving replies to your specific queries. 1. You got your promotion during Kethu sub period which was a benefic with 93% strength. 2. Thereafter your Venus sub period till 2016 Dec 22, it is a malefic planet with a respectable strength. But in comparison it produces reduced effects of a malefic nature. This may continues till Nov 2017. 18 3. Your marital house is almost 60% strength and therefore you will have a happy married life. 4. The timing of marriage I would put in 2015 Nov/2016 May period. And you will have a girl and a boy as your children. You have a very powerful horoscope with 58.48% strength and after 2017, you will have excellent time right through till 2036(Jupiter’s Period) and later till 2055(Saturn’s period). I would suggest you recite Narayanakavacham daily till you learn it by heart. Thereafter make it a practice to recite it whenever your mind is free which will generate a shield around you to protect you from all possible evil effects. If you have specific queries you can email me and I will answer it based on the above evaluations. Ramachandran T.M 16 Jan 2015. 19 Chapter 3 : Horoscope - Evaluation Vs Prediction What is going to happen in future. All of us wish to know the answers to this question. But can it be done? And if at all it is possible, are such predictions trustworthy. Let us take Meteorology for example. They predict rain and it is very sunny on that day. We are disappointed. I have asked some of my airline pilot friends whether they rely on weather forecasting. Their answer was they just listen to the briefing before takeoff, but never bother about it. It is while flying the aircraft they expect turbulence irrespective of weather forecasts. Weather changes so fast and one has to be prepared for such sudden changes. So in effect Meteorology is an unreliable branch of science. They say over a period of time or over a vast area something could be predicted, but not specifically at a particular place. Yes, we all know one day we will die, but what's the use of knowing that! Had we known that we will die on a specific day, of course some things can be done to finish off all pending assignments, distribute all your wealth and assets etc. and wait for St.Peter at your doorstep. From my experience in handling the subject of Astrology for over 5 decades, I am very disappointed by the mails being received from readers. Most of them are only interested in questions which cannot be answered precisely using Astrology? Like "When will I get a Job?" or "When will I get married?" or "I have problems with my marriage. How can it be resolved etc." There is hardly any interest shown how best astrology can really be used in our life. And I am also totally flabbergasted by astrologers predicting political situation and who will win the Elections etc. These are all beyond the realms of Astrology, a divine science which should be used for more respectable and spiritually motivating subjects. Some of the astrologers even go to the extent of suggesting remedies which are very costly and of no use at all like Gem Recommendations, Homas (some form of worship prevalent among Hindus) and Poojas (idol worship) which are all being attributed to invoke God's blessings. I would like to say God is not very choosy in blessing people particularly ones who are spending a lot of money on appeasing him by meaningless rituals being conducted by the Poojaris (Priests) who have hardly any in depth spiritual knowledge like the Priests on the Banks of river Ganges in Varanasi or in many other places. Gems have suddenly come into the forefront due to the influence of media creation about the importance of purity of Gold, creation of dates like Akshaya thritheeya (Birthday of Lord Parasuram) for amassing Gold, Gems etc. making profit for the jewellery business communities. I would therefore like to share my views on Astrology being used in predicting very mundane affairs and the recommendation of remedies in a impartial way. Remedies might to some extent do some counselling effect on the questioner of their problems. But in fact these do not help them at all except some loss of their hard earned money. The basic principle of Astrology is illustrated in the following verse in Sanskrit which describes what should be the true nature of our Karmas or deeds : Ahimsakasya Danthasya Dharmadika Dhanasya cha Sarvatha Niyamasthasya Sada Sanugraha Graha which really means that those who follow the axioms 1. Do not hurt anyone for sport. 2. Always earn money through Dharma marga (Honest Means) only. 3. Always obey the rules of the society you live in. 4. Such people will always be blessed by the Stars and Planets 20 If you can follow the above, there will be no need to do any remedies to ease your problems. And God's blessing will always be invoked. By telling that all such predictions/remedies and the Poojavidhees (method of worships) are illustrated in the old scriptures by sages is only a half truth. They have written so many things including the verse written above to easily get blessings from God. And coming back to Astrology, it is not at all a predictive science. It is only a self evaluating method of how your life is going to be on taking birth on this planet Earth or (perhaps in another planet also), using the input as Date, Time and place of birth. And to cast a horoscope is only a mathematical way of placing planets in the different houses of the chart taking into consideration the longitudes of planets, sun and moon etc. at the time of birth with respect to the place where you are born which details are continuously being monitored scientifically by NASA and those figures are the ones we use in all almanacs round the world. Now that we have the horoscope chart, it has to be further analysed to find the strength of the houses (Bhavas) which is the backbone of Astrology. Each bhava is a part or limb of Kalapurusha (Time is considered as a manifestation like a human being) and there are various significations attributed to each house. You can get a detailed information about this by reading my first article in this book or by searching the internet which contains many sites giving these details. Again the method of calculating these strengths of planets and houses is well illustrated in our ancient scriptures in a very superficial manner since in those days the science of mathematics were not well developed like Trigonometry, Solid geometry, Differentiation and Integration etc. It was Dr. B.V. Raman in his book “Graha and Bhava Balas” written in English who put them into a meaningful presentation which is now widely used in preparing Shadbalas and Bhavabalas (Strength of planets and Houses). So using these strengths, we can prepare a mark sheet of Life when a child is born. It need not only be a child, it could be anything a problem coming to your mind, or a sudden idea or a plan and you name it, a birth time is there for every one of our issues. These mark sheets give the Percentage strength of individual houses which I have already explained in the earlier articles. And how does this help? It evaluates the horoscope as to how strong or otherwise a particular house is and you will know the success factor of all significations pertaining to that house together with the net strength or success factor of your life. Let us take for example, the 7th house which represents marital bliss among other things, most of the questions usually asked about. Or the 10th house which represents Career/Profession and the 11th house which signifies the Returns you get from Career/Job. Refer my earlier articles. The strength can be classified as follows : A 35% strength is required for a Pass and as the strength goes up the potency of the house also increases progressively. Perhaps a strength of more than 75% is considered to be Very good, Excellent or even Outstanding. And your success factor in matters pertaining to the house could thus be well understood. What is the advantage of knowing this strength? You can go ahead with matters signified by the respective strong houses with all the might and you will be successful in your ventures. And keep away from matters signified by houses which has a poor strength or you may soft pedal in such matters and leave it aside to take its own course. Trying to swim against the tide is useless and you will soon get tired and perhaps even drown. Is it not? 21 And to increase the strength of a weak house and therefore the matters signified by those houses, nobody can help you. No remedies, no astrologer, not even homas, manthras or poojas. It will remain as it is. It is your knowledge that the strength is weak, that is what will help you. When you find a sign "Slippery Road ahead" while you are driving your vehicle, what do you do? Just be careful, that is all. Is it not? We cannot stop the car, remove the slipperiness ahead and proceed. The best we could do is to lower the speed, do not apply the brake all of a sudden or perhaps gear down to have more control over the engine. Forewarned is forearmed just like you carry an umbrella if you know it is going to rain. And Predictions being offered by Astrologers using Dasa(Periods), Anthardasas(sub periods) are totally meaningless. It is mentioned in the BPHS (the authoritative book on astrology Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra) that Dasas are subdivided into Antardasa and each antardasa is divided into 9 paryanthardas(sub sub period) known as PD and each PD is subdivided into 9 Sookshma Antardasas known as SAD and each SAD is further sub divided into 9 Praana Anthardasas PAD and each PAD is further sub divided into 9 Deha Antardasas and so on. Just look at the example below to understand the hierarchy of the periods and sub periods in a major period: Let us say someone is running Mercury Main Period which lasts for 18 years. These 18 years are sub divided into 9 sub periods and each sub period is further sub divided into 9 PDs and so on. Have a look at the following. Merc MD: 2071-07-31 (8:41:60 pm) - 2088-07-30 (11:38:24 pm) – Main Period Ven AD: 2074-12-24 (4:29:17 pm) - 2077-10-24 (12:58:41 pm) – Sub period(AD) Jup PD: 2076-06-02 (5:42:13 pm) - 2076-10-18 (5:14:08 pm) – (PD) Ket SD: 2076-08-01 (12:42:03 pm) - 2076-08-09 (1:52:25 pm) – (SAD) Mars PAD: 2076-08-04 (9:55:16 am) - 2076-08-04 (9:11:22 pm) – (PAD) Deha-antardasas in this PAD: Mars: 2076-08-04 (9:55:16 am) - 2076-08-04 (10:34:42 am) Rah: 2076-08-04 (10:34:42 am) - 2076-08-04 (12:16:07 pm) Jup: 2076-08-04 (12:16:07 pm) - 2076-08-04 (1:46:16 pm) Sat: 2076-08-04 (1:46:16 pm) - 2076-08-04 (3:33:19 pm) Merc: 2076-08-04 (3:33:19 pm) - 2076-08-04 (5:09:06 pm) Ket: 2076-08-04 (5:09:06 pm) - 2076-08-04 (5:48:32 pm) Ven: 2076-08-04 (5:48:32 pm) - 2076-08-04 (7:41:13 pm) Sun: 2076-08-04 (7:41:13 pm) - 2076-08-04 (8:15:02 pm) Moon: 2076-08-04 (8:15:02 pm) - 2076-08-04 (9:11:22 pm) From the above you will note that on 4th Aug 2076, from 8:15 p.m to 9:11 pm, for a period of 56 minutes, this native has Moons DAD within Mars PAD in Kethu SD in Jupiter PD in Venus Ad in Mercury MD which means the combined effect of all these planets are manifesting during this period of 56 minutes. So how can you say that your Mercury Period of 17 years is good or bad as a whole. All these observations boil down to the fact that we are controlled by the net integrated strength of all the planets taken together during each breath we take and what is the purpose of, that in one horoscope, Venus is strong and therefore during Venus Dasa, everything happens will be good for you. 22 What a meaningless observation. We are totally controlled by all the planets working in tandem and not by individual periods or sub periods or sub sub periods and so on. So therefore please do not get carried away by predictions of Astrologers that your such and such Dasa is starting on such and such a date and from then on you will be happy and prosperous. They may be doing it to appease you. We all look forward to better days ahead. Isn't it? God has created each one of us for a purpose and we are given certain assignments to be carried out on His behalf. We have no option but to do it. We can never sit idle or sleep off our life. That is why your body is fully controlled and there is some Mathematics behind that control. You can take food up to your mouth and after that everything happens on a time bound program and after that time, you feel hungry again. Happiness is also similar to hunger, once you get your happiness of choice, you will start having new desires and so on. There is no end to it. And to understand the truth of our life, you need to be well educated not from colleges or universities but by observing life around you. To each one of us we have different definitions for our desires. Like Health, Wealth, Courage, Happiness, Children, Debts/Diseases/Enemies, Marital bliss, Sexual Enjoyment, Luck or Fortune, Career, Gains and Spiritual Knowledge leading to Salvation. To my mind Wealth is your knowledge that you have enough. You may have a different definition. But it does not have a universal definition. So is Health, Success etc. Remember that we are all screw drivers in the hands of God, and we do not have much say in how or where and for what we should be used for. He knows Best and He will make you do His wishes to be carried out which is incidentally embedded in your DNA codes. And that is why you get inspirations for doing a job seconds before you do them. If someone finds that his marriage is not taking place, it is God's wish and He knows best when you should get married and at that particular time, your girl/boy will appear in front of you. A Python never hunts for its prey. It just lies down and the prey appears before it whenever it is hungry. So friends, do not worry about your life. Horoscope is only a map of your life. And use it to your best advantage. Do not ask silly questions like whether I will get a job. When you are born, will have a job to do and at the appropriate time, you will be given your assignment. And mind you, no job is bad or good whether you are a Software Architect, Chartered Accountant or a Civil Service Officer or an unscrupulous Politician or a Sewage Cleaner. They all have their places in this Universe and whenever there is an imbalance God will intervene. Don't you remember during World War II, more than 5 million Jews were exterminated. No human being like Hitler alone could have done it. It had God's blessings to be carried out. Otherwise it would have been impossible. And look at the earthquakes, volcanic eruptions etc. God intervenes whenever there is need to do so. Look at the recent flood in Kedarnath and Badrinath at Uttarakhand in the Himalayas. All anti environmental constructions were wiped off. Spiritual knowledge is the ultimate of all knowledge and spend your gifted time in this world to acquire it rather than getting an overseas job or listening to an Astrologer that you will marry a beautiful, rich and loving girl. All these could last only for a short while and afterwards you will be in search of new pastures. One might now ask the question, if everything is predestined and decided by God, why should you pray to God. The answer is God has also used while writing your destiny in certain places "As you Wish" which means some things are left to you and you have to wish for that to materialise. ************ 23 Chapter 4 : How to Evaluate a Horoscope To start with, let me tell you that Astrology is not a predictive science and you cannot predict your future using astrology. Each one of us has different definitions about the qualities of life like Health,Wealth, Happiness, Education, a Good career, Marital bliss, Luck etc. We are all unique in our creations and no two living beings are identical in nature or spirit. If you can digest the above, then read on. I am writing this article at the behest of many of my students who would like to know how I calculate the strengths of planets and houses and evaluate them to produce a Mark sheet of Life. Needless to say, to understand this article one has to have a basic knowledge and should be familiar with the terms and axioms used in Astrology. Familiarity with the Natal Charts and divisional charts and the Dasa system is imperative. To top it all you must have all the canons required for becoming an Astrologer which are detailed below as extracted from Brihat Samhita. This article is not for beginners. Varahamihira gives the following qualifications of an astrologer in his Brihat Samhita. "The astrologer must be pure, skillful, bold, eloquent, possessed of a ready wit, a knower of time and place, filled with equanimity, not timid in assembly, victorious in debate with other astrologers, expert, free from vices, well-versed in the art of performing rituals of both curative and preventive types, ever engaged in worshipping deities, performing observances and austerities, possessed of scientific knowledge and capable of answering questions and prescribing remedies.” In his Brihat Samhita, "Canons of the Astrologer", Varahamihira gives more lengthy rules or qualifications of an astrologer. Students should read these statements by Varahamihira and be aware of these ancient principles in their daily life if they want to be Astrologers. That person, who has mastery of this science of Vedic astrology, who has a good knowledge of Mathematics, who leads a religious life, who is truthful, who is free from conceit and who is well versed in the Vedas, mantras, and tantras, he alone can be called a Daivajna or a seer. In the Hindu Vedic tradition, "religious" refers more to a secular way of respecting the Divine presence in all people and in the environment also. It also refers to one who has a genuine spiritual path and practice. In so doing, one should have an inherent respect for all religions, bearing in mind that though spiritual paths may vary, they all have the same goal. The study of the Vedas and the Upanishads, which underlie all of Vedic astrology, speak of many deities. But all are aspects of the One Supreme Deity, also called the One Underlying Reality. If a person is unable to understand the real purport of the Science(by separating the essentials from the non essentials by means of his intellectual acumen), or unable to answer any question put to him, or cannot explain the science to pupils, how could he be known as an Astrologer, one well versed in the Science? If an Astrologer has mastered the astronomical Science, and has brought about perfect agreement between the mathematical results and observations made by means of the shadow of gnomon and the water appliance, and is well established in the science of predictive astrology, his pronouncements will never go wrong or fruitless. 24 Vishnugupta, also known as Chanakya declared that perchance a man might be able to reach the other shore of the ocean by swimming, being driven by the force of wind. On the other hand, never could one, who is not a Sage, even dream of crossing the great ocean that is known as kalapurusha or the God of time, i.e the Science of Astrology. A true astrologer therefore must lead a life of contentment, detachment and contemplation. The predictions made by an astrologer who has mastered both the theory and practice of the science of Astrology and Astronomy, as if it were spread before his eyes in this world, inscribed in his intellect and firmly implanted in his heart, will never go wrong. The basic input that is required to prepare a horoscope or a Natal Chart is the date, time and place of birth which must be totally accurate. Special instructions should be given to the delivery room attendants to note down the time of the first cry of the baby as that is what is required to prepare a horoscope. Once the Birth details are obtained, the astrologer should work out the longitudes of all planets and the Ascendant(Lagna) either manually or using a computer software as shown below. For a sample let us take the natal chart of a baby born on 16 July 2014 at 4:00 p.m. in Calicut, India. A sample you can see in my article in Chapter 2 :"Scientific Evaluation of a Horoscope". The next thing you should do is using the longitudes of planets in the chart, the strengths of planets should be computed as shown below. You can either use a software or work it out manually which will take approximately 80 man hours to complete. Planet Shadbala Sthana Bala Kala Bala DigBala Cheshta DrigBala Naisargika Bala Sun 6.76 132.78 176.4 43.25 52.4 -6.79 60 Moon 7.21 179.99 135.44 58.19 41.44 7.69 51.43 Mars 5.69 159.79 53.45 46.31 38.98 25.83 17.14 Mercury 8.03 211.91 221.26 6.48 22.79 -6.1 25.7 Jupiter 7.79 194.68 230.7 15.31 1.43 -8.78 34.28 Venus 5.64 116.63 144.43 25.55 15.98 -6.86 42.85 Saturn 7.23 152.88 206.38 9.14 37.29 19.7 8.57 The method of calculation is well illustrated in the book of “Graha and BhavaBalas” by Dr.B.V.Raman. Or it is available on the net if you search for “ShadBalas and BhavaBalas”. 26 Using these strength of planets we should now calculate the strength of all the 12 houses of the horoscope which is also illustrated in the above book. Let us now have a look at it. House Bhava Bala In rupas Lord's bala DigBala DrigBala 1st 402.40 6.71 341.49 0.00 60.92 2nd 549.40 9.16 467.61 20.00 61.78 3rd 551.50 9.19 433.96 50.00 67.54 4th 526.83 8.78 433.96 30.00 62.87 5th 552.81 9.21 467.61 50.00 35.20 6th 342.59 5.71 341.49 20.00 -18.90 7th 356.64 5.94 338.58 30.00 -11.95 8th 487.27 8.12 482.05 10.00 -4.78 9th 435.71 7.26 432.73 10.00 -7.02 10th 514.61 8.58 405.63 60.00 48.98 11th 603.13 10.05 482.05 40.00 81.08 12th 462.86 7.71 338.58 50.00 74.28 These are the main figures we require to evaluate a horoscope. Using these figures we have to now moderate them for the relevant residential strength of planets and its benefic/malefic aspects for which we can use a Spread Sheet like Microsoft Excel. This is needed because the shadbala strengths of the planets are as at the time of birth which has to be moderated using the residential strength of these planets in the various houses. The fundamental principle underlying this is planets in the middle of the bhavas has full strength and as it moves from the cusps, the strengths are proportionately reduced. The planetary dispositions calculated thus are given below. Planet Residential Strength Good % Bad% Nature Sun 35.00 69.73 17.52 Benefic Moon 63.86 65.70 28.34 Benefic Mars 26.18 47.72 41.90 Benefic Mercury 29.63 42.22 49.98 Malefic Jupiter 6.16 15.38 6.02 Benefic Venus 11.09 41.02 50.70 Malefic Saturn 82.83 78.27 5.13 Benefic Rahu 35.69 42.22 49.98 Malefic Kethu 35.69 15.38 6.02 Benefic Net 36.23 You will note that the the sum of the Good% and Bad% is not always 100. Any shortfall from 100% shows the planet’s neutral behaviour during which time it is lifeless and your freewill will then take charge. I have included a suitable example in my first article of this book. 27 From the above you will note the residential strengths of all the planets and their Good, Bad percentages and their respective nature whether it is a benefic or malefic. Malefic planets if they have a good residential strength will not be that bad in fact, its maleficence will be considerably reduced. You must bear this in mind. Benefic planets will always do good in proportion to their strength. We will have to now moderate the strength of houses calculated above with these planetary dispositions suitably. Have a look at the final figures duly moderated. In this particular example the native has a net strength of 57.70% which is graded as a Second Class horoscope. From the frequency distribution you will note that he has a 83% percentile strength which means that 83% of the population are below him in happiness and success factor. Aaroodha strength is how the native will be viewed by others, further details of which you can get from the internet by searching for “Arudha Strength”. In this particular example, the native is viewed by the public with less 28 strength than his real strength and this could indicate that the native is a very simple person without any pretensions. In a similar way we can also find out the transitory influence of planets while in transit of a zodiacal sign. We recalculate the strengths of houses after the transit using the same Ascendant of the natal chart. An example of such a chart is given below. This chart shows the influence of Jupiter’s transit in July 2014 to Cancer in respect of my own horoscope. In fact you can use this technique on a day to day or month to month basis since all the planets are constantly in motion. House Description Birth Self Analysis % Now Transitory % Difference % 1 Personality, Individuality, Head 65.28 91.03 25.75 2 Wealth, assets, family, speech, Face 76.42 67.44 -8.98 3 Co-borns, confidants, courage, Hands and Shoulders 63.22 54.83 -8.39 4 Happiness, comforts, pleasures, Heart & Lungs 71.05 78.42 7.37 5 Children, intelligence, mind, Upper Abdomen 78.08 58.00 -20.08 6 Debts, Diseases, Enemies, Lower Abdomen 67.41 52.55 -14.86 7 Marital Happiness, Small Intestine, Liver 73.97 77.28 3.31 8 Longevity, Distresses, Colon, Kidneys, Genitals 64.72 46.29 -18.44 9 Luck ,Fortune, Thighs 83.06 56.70 -26.36 10 Career, Profession, Job Satisfaction, Knees 64.25 75.33 11.08 11 Gains, Returns from Career, Calf and ankles 48.29 47.51 -0.78 12 Wasteful Expenditure, Losses, Feet 66.22 92.90 26.67 Net strength 69.04 68.32 -0.72 Higher strength for positive significations makes it more potent Higher strength for negative significations negate the negatives (Debts, Diseases, Enemies, Losses etc.) From the above you will note that the Jupiter transit to Cancer has benefited me in respect of some houses like 1st, 4th,7th,10th and 12th houses while in respect of the other houses, I have been a loser. However the net strength is lower by 0.72% which is negligible. I have also now introduced one more column to the above evaluation titled "Naked Analysis". An example is given below. The Naked Analysis is the strength below which it will not go down during the life. The self analysis strength is the mean of the strength of any house during the whole period of your life which can go up or down due to transitory influences of planets. Look at the following table. So with a Mean Strength of 49.50% net strength for you and with a Naked Strength of 35.14% means that during the course of your entire life, the net strength will vary from 35.14% to 63.50% due to the constant motion of the planets. 29 The mean strength of the Higher education signified by the 4th house in the above table is quite good with 57.74% ( Varies from 40.98% to 74.5%). Similarly one can assess the potency of all the houses of your horoscope. Now you might have got an idea how well we can evaluate a horoscope using figures rather than groping in the dark and trying to interpret them using axioms which cannot be empirically computed. The periods and sub periods can also thus be evaluated using the figures of planetary dispositions helping us to time the good and bad periods. In the chapter on “Day to day Predictions in Astrology”, this topic is more elaborately discussed. ******************** 30 Chapter 5 : Definitions in Astrology When we evaluate a horoscope we calculate the strength of individual houses which I have discussed in detail in my earlier articles. Say for example a person has a strength of 58% for his 4th house which signifies mental happiness, ability to enjoy material comforts, happiness of mother etc. But these are terms which cannot be the same for everyone like mental happiness may have different definitions for different people. For some if they have a lot of money they may be mentally happy and for some others if they have a good house and furnishings they may be happy and so on. These days when people run after materialistic pleasures, they have varying reasons for being happy. Here I am trying to give the real definitions as applicable to astrology of different qualities of Life. Health: There are people who think that they are healthy if they do not have ailments while some others consider that if they can have one or two pegs everyday and if they can enjoy a drink in the evening that is a signal of being healthy. Here I am trying to define Health as follows. Being healthy is a state of the organism when it functions optimally without evidence of disease or abnormality and is also in a state of dynamic balance in which an individual's or a group's capacity to cope with all the circumstances of living is at an optimal level characterized by anatomic, physiologic, and psychological integrity, ability to perform personally valued family, work and community roles and ability to deal with any physical, biologic, psychological, and social stress, a feeling of well-being, and freedom from the risk of disease and untimely death. Generally speaking, Health of an individual is perceived by looking at the first house and sixth house of a horoscope. Personality : This is evaluated by the first house and is the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character. Personality can be defined as consistency in a person's way of being, that is, long-term consistency in their particular ways of perceiving, thinking, acting and reacting as a person with organised patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour. Your personality style is your organizing principle. It propels you on your life path. It represents the orderly arrangement of all your attributes, thoughts, feelings, attitudes, behaviours, and coping mechanisms. It is the distinctive pattern of your psychological functioning—the way you think, feel, and behave—that makes you definitely You. There are people who think Personality is how one looks physically like Amitabh Bachan or Charlton Heston both of them were tall and handsome in their years of fame. Wealth: Wealth is the abundance of valuable resources or spiritual / material possessions, or the control of such assets. One who knows he has enough is Wealthy. Wealth creation refers to the combination of all available resources in a strategic way in order to generate surplus earnings. The surplus earning is what is referred to as wealth and it is used to acquire more resources to become more productive. It is also defined as how little you have to spend to keep yourself alive and can meet all your obligations with ease. This is analysed by the second house in a horoscope. Your bank balance is not the indication of your wealth. There are many rich men and women who though with a fat bank balance are not wealthy or healthy. Spiritual wealth is the most important which we could aspire for. Material wealth is like having high degrees from universities, but lack knowledge and we call them educated. This is evaluated using the 2nd house in a horoscope. 31 Happiness: Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. An acronym PERMA is there to summarize Positive Psychology's co relational findings : Humans seem happiest when they have 1. Pleasure (tasty food, warm baths, etc.), 2. Engagement (the absorption of an enjoyed yet challenging activity), 3. Relationships (social ties have turned out to be extremely reliable indicator of happiness), 4. Meaning (a perceived quest or belonging to something bigger), and 5. Accomplishments (having realized tangible goals). The strength of the fourth house is used to evaluate Happiness in one’s life. Courage : Courage is the ability and willingness to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. Physical courage is courage in the face of physical pain, hardship, death, or threat of death, while moral courage is the ability to act rightly in the face of popular opposition, shame, scandal, or discouragement. The third house evaluates Courage in one’s horoscope. Marriage : Marriage is the union of body, mind and soul between opposite sexes. The rituals associated with marriage have no place in Astrology. If you have the above with a person of opposite sex, you are technically married. Losing your virgin status for the first time is marriage. People often ask me whether they have a second marriage indicated in a horoscope. In fact this question cannot be answered. Every sexual intercourse with the opposite sex is a marriage. It can be with the same person or a different person and is very much dependent on the rules of the society you live in. In either case it is a marriage. If you observe nature you will understand that marriage takes place with different partners and is intended for reproduction and not for sexual pleasure which is incidental. We are all to some extent hypocrites. I can say that hardly anyone would be there in this world who mentally do not undress one of the opposite sex and at least mentally enjoy sex with them. This is even found among saints and sages in our epics. A happy marriage is a long conversation which always seems too short. In a happy marriage it is the wife who provides the climate, the husband the landscape. The secret of a happy marriage remains a secret. The happiest marriage I can picture or imagine myself would be the union of a deaf man to a blind woman. The seventh house strength of the horoscope indicates success in marriage/s. Luck : In a horoscope Ninth house signifies Luck. That which happens to a person, an event, good or evil, affecting one's interests or happiness, and which is deemed casual, a course or series of such events regarded as occurring by chance, a purposeless, unpredictable and uncontrollable force that shapes 32 events favourably or unfavourably for an individual, group or cause is called Luck. It signifies the overall blessings of God bestowed on you. Career : Success can be defined for almost all of us in terms of our ability to live a life where we are not dependent on someone or something else (like the government) to be able to put food on the table and a roof over our head. The great thing about this standard for success, however, is that if you live your talents, passions and values, the money comes in a way that provides for what you need, and, in many cases, what you want. Money is a result of living by defining your own success instead of the means by which to define success. And you should get good job satisfaction and contentment too to be having a successful career. You look at the strength of tenth house to evaluate success in Career/Profession. Distress: Distress is an aversive, negative state in which coping and adaptation processes fail to return an organism to physiological and/or psychological homeostasis. Extreme anxiety, sorrow, or pain, acute physical or mental suffering, affliction, trouble and a state of extreme necessity or misfortune indicate Distress in life. Eighth house of the horoscope is analyzed for evaluating distresses in life. Intelligence: The ability to use memory, knowledge, experience, understanding, reasoning, imagination and judgment in order to solve problems and adapt to new situations, the ability to learn, and have opinions that are based on reason is Intelligence. The strength of the Fifth house signifies the intelligence quotient. Spirituality: Spirituality is that which gives meaning to one's life and draws one to transcend oneself. It is a broader concept than religion, although that is one expression of spirituality. Other expressions include prayer, meditation, interactions with others or nature, and relationship with God or a higher power. Having to do with deep, often religious, feelings and beliefs, including a person’s sense of peace, purpose, connection to others, and beliefs about the meaning of life are also part of Spirituality. It is usually evaluated by the twelfth house of a horoscope. Foreign Travels: Astrology do not endorse man made divisions of this globe into countries and continents. Therefore questions like "Will I go abroad?" is beyond the scope of astrology. What at best we could say is that there can be long distance travels in life which again means long distance from the place of your birth. In the olden days, if you cross a river or any running water, it was considered long distance travel since in those days crossing such obstacles were very difficult when modern transport systems were not there. Today you can go to Los Angeles from Bombay in a matter of just a day and the world has become a global village. Long Distance travels are indicated by the 7th house and if the house is potent, you can have fruitful travels and futile travels if the house is weak. Perhaps if you keep these definitions in mind, evaluation of a horoscope becomes more refined and meaningful rather than having individual definitions based on whims and fancies. ********* 33 Chapter 6 : Are there remedies in Astrology In my earlier articles, I have illustrated evaluating a horoscope based on strengths of planets and houses and how this will help a common man understanding his chart with ease similar to evaluating a Mark sheet received from Board of Schools/Universities with gradings indicated as is indicated in my earlier articles. I do now get mails from readers how a poor strength for a particular house or the poor net strength itself can be improved upon to have a better life altogether and I thought that I must write this article to remove any misgivings in this regard. Ancient scriptures on Astrology say about conducting Pooja (Worship), Using Mantra and Yantras, Wearing Gemstones etc. to improve strength of planets as possible remedies in improving the life, if the charts are otherwise impotent. Also read Autobiography of a Yogi My view in these matters is that Astrological strength of horoscope tables give you the success factor in matters signified by the respective houses as is destined by God. Why it is different in different people is because the net debit or credit of Karma in previous lives are different and that has got a strong bearing in the present life just like in Accounts, retained earnings or profits/losses are carried forward to the next financial year and this make current years performance easy or difficult as the case may be. If a large amount of profit is carried forward, you can take it easy this year. Isn't it so? Similarly when you have large credit balances in previous Karma, the current life becomes easy and that is why some people get superlative strengths in horoscope charts while others with large debit balances carried forward, life becomes very difficult to endure and hardships have necessarily to be suffered to even out the accounts of Karma. Remedies are borrowed funds from God to endure out the performance in the current life and necessarily a request has to be submitted to God which can be done either by yourself, or an agent or a middleman who is proficient in inter mediating or collective bargaining in the case of a group of people having common miseries. So for individual horoscopes, a direct request is what is best and that is achieved by Praying to Him sincerely with dedication doing abject surrender at His Feet on a continuing basis. It is not enough to make the request once, it has to be done over and over again till He responds and respond He will certainly when He thinks fit. We have to wait patiently until the request is granted. Many a times He grants you not what you asked for but something else which ultimately will lead to your miseries being reduced and endurable. He has a mechanism that permits total shut down when you are faced with unendurable pain or miseries as in the case of a person having an accident and he suffers unendurable pain and immediately the curtain is down and he will lose consciousness and he will come back to senses only when his pain becomes endurable. Haven't you observed such things? Sometimes even when you have incidents leading to great sorrow on a given day, after one or two nights sleep your intensity of sorrow reduces to a great extent and soon you will forget about it. This also is an automatic mechanism by God to even out your miseries. The ability to forget is a God given boon to us. Prayers are of various kinds. Listening to, Chanting of prayers is adequate in Kali yuga, the present era prevailing. You can opt for the verses like Narayanakavacham, Om Namassivaya or any other prayers prevalent in the area you live in or for people of other religions the appropriate equivalent like for Christians "Our Father which art in Heaven... etc.". 34 Lot of people complain that they have no time to say prayers or chant verses of praise to God, but you will find they have enough time to listen to A.R.Rahman's music like "Jay Ho" which can even waken up a sleeping drunkard. That is the attitude of people in general. I have been suggesting people to record the verses of prayers on their mobile and listen to it while going to bed and put it in rewind mode and by the time you are asleep, that would have created so much of positive vibrations in your body which will give you a peaceful sleep. And in this process praying becomes a habit which you will never get rid of. What is most important is that you should not give up until your wishes are fulfilled in some form or other. Usually people lose patience and they tend to discontinue the practice which makes God think that you are not genuine in your requests. Many people have become atheists or agnostics when they do not get any response from God even after praying to Him for a long time little realizing that they are being put to test by God. Try it out for yourselves, and you will understand the effect of Prayers over a period of time. In my personal experience of handling Astrology for the last 50+ years, I have found and received many feed backs from my clients that Prayers have worked best to their advantage. For a long time in the early days of my practice of Astrology, I used to recommend Gems for deficiencies of strengths of planets and most of them have given me feed backs that it has not made much of a difference in their life. So I do not recommend Gems anymore and I have talked to many Gemologists and they have in private admitted that they are not sure of the effect of Gems and it is only for business promotion for the Gem dealers, Gems are being recommended and their job is only to ensure that a Gem is real or what carat-age it is of. Many of the sites on the internet which offer free astrological services are only interested in selling their wares particularly the Gems, Yanthras or Thanthras. Poojas are a different form of prayer for worshiping the deities and if it can be done by yourself with dedication, it is a very useful remedy. But using an agent or priest for this purpose will not be of much use mainly because his sincerity in doing the job is of a doubtful nature and he too is doing his job for making money only and is hardly ever dedicated to your welfare being granted by God. Most of the time while doing the Pooja, he thinks that he should get many more such opportunities to do Poojas to enrich himself. Mass Prayers to God for common purposes produce abundance of positive energy and it certainly helps for granting of wishes for common good. God is very considerate to such common demands. Churches, Mosques and Temples are used mainly for such congregation. What one should understand is that the effect of remedies do not proportionately increase to the amount of money you spend on remedies. It is your dedication and humbleness to God is what matters in performing remedies. I would like to narrate a story here for your understanding of how God helps those who help themselves. A woman walked into a new shop and found God at the counter. "What do you sell?" She asked. "Everything your heart desires." replied God The woman then decided to ask for the best things she could think of. "I want peace of mind, love, happiness, wisdom and freedom from fear" 35 God smiled and replied "My dear, you have got me wrong. We do not sell fruits here, only seeds. You must be well aware that if the seed sprouts, grows and becomes a tree or a shrub, only then it bears fruit which you want to have" Therefore these seeds which I give you will have to be planted and nourished with your labour, dedication, spirit of service and love to have fruits at the right time. Most important, you ought to have lot of patience, forbearance and the capacity to face pain and absorb unanticipated problems. Even the noble soul undergoes self cleansing and self mortification by putting lot many restraints on oneself and leads a life of austerity and self discipline which not everybody can do. Always remember "No pain, no Gain". Visiting Temples and places of Spiritual moorings The fundamental point that everybody should note is that God is not present in any inert stone or statue and hence, a specific place containing such stone or statue has no real significance. The spiritual significance is forcibly rubbed on such places and the stones and statues stand only as representative models of God. Such places certainly help the beginners to develop the faith and devotion in case the relevant atmosphere exists. The development of spiritual devotion is real even though God does not exist there. It is a psychological treatment and of course the results are positive and real. One ignorant person developed head-ache due to a false impression that the head-ache was due to the entry of a squirrel into the head through the ear. No doctor could cure him since the patient did not believe any argument against such entry. Hence, there was no cure. One clever doctor agreed to the argument of the patient and threw out a squirrel kept in his hand in hidden way near his ear. The patient believed that the squirrel came out from his head through his ear and subsequently the head-ache disappeared. All this treatment of the doctor is based on false concept, but the result was real and wonderful. Similarly, all these pious places are such psychological clinic centers. The unreal stories created in such places have positive effect on the human psychology and develop real tremendous devotion to God. If the truth is revealed, the psychological treatment gets spoiled. If the truth is not revealed, several exploitations and frauds of business take place as is happening now. Actually, in the olden days, these pilgrim places were in lonely atmosphere situated in forests or on hills very difficult to access except by walking or trekking uphills and you generally get totally tired by the time you reach the temple. The very peaceful atmosphere there co-operated with the development of devotion. But, today, these places are terribly busy with crowds of people running to fulfill their desires using automated vehicles or helicopters and there are five star hotel facilites. The basic concept is lost since you are expected to set aside all the material desires being away from the populated places. But, today, these pilgrim places are more populated than the cities in which you reside. People run to such pious places to fulfill their material desires. Thus, the atmosphere is not at all congenial for meditation or spiritual concentration in absence of spiritual associates. The actual purpose is lost. The priests in such places are busier in looting the public. People are exploited by the false stories created about such pious places. The priests exploit the public to loot money with the help of such false stories (Sthalapuranams). Originally, these false stories were created as psychological tricks to develop faith and devotion in the ignorant public. Today, the same false stories are used to attract the people to such places for the business of the priests or the temple administration. Therefore, today, the pilgrimage is only giving reverse results in the spiritual line. The long journey and absence of hygienic food etc., result in acquirement of new diseases. Lot of money is also wasted in journey. Both health and wealth are lost apart from loss of spiritual concentration due to this run after 36 fulfillment of desires. Your house with less number of people is a far better place than any such pilgrim place. Your prayer room is far better than the crowded temple. However, if you argue that there should be change of place, the new place should have more peaceful atmosphere than your house. You can achieve this by going a few miles away from your town and not to a pilgrim place, which is more crowded. You can have spiritual meeting and do prayers in such real peaceful atmosphere taking a photo of God there with you. Such trips will really fulfill such necessities and also will really help your spiritual development. The calamity happened in Kedarnath is an expression of God to discourage such pilgrimages, which are associated with only negative results from the beginning to the end. If your prayers are based on fulfillment of desires, God, sometimes, helps to fulfill your desires, in case such action has the possibility of development of your faith and devotion in God. In such context, the good fruit of your own good deeds is taken out from your fixed deposit only to fulfill your desire. Such action is done by God whether you pray in your house or in the temple or even in a pilgrim's place. This action has nothing to do with the place and it is done only to increase your faith and devotion. Therefore, for fulfillment of your desires, you need not run to a temple or a pilgrimage place. Instead pray to God to give you happiness and contentment. You need not tell him what you want, He knows best and he will grant you what is needed. And still if you are interested in offering something to God to ease your miseries, you can send your offerings in the form of money to any temple or place of worship using Fund transfer to their web sites which all of them have in this modern era of computers. They will reciprocate with their Prasadams in return. God has His own plans as narrated in the story below : Read it with patience. Once there was a sweeper in a well known temple and he was very sincere and devoted. Every time he saw thousands of devotees coming to take darshan of the Lord, he thought that the Lord is standing all the time and giving darshan and He must be feeling very tired. So one day very innocently he asked the Lord whether he can take the place of the Lord for a day so that the Lord can have some relief and rest. The Deity of Temple replied, "I do not mind taking a break. I will transform you like Myself, but you must do one thing. You must just stand here like Me, smile at everyone and just give benedictions. Do not interfere with anything and do not say anything. Remember you are the deity and you just have faith that I have a master plan for everything." The sweeper agreed to this. The next day the sweeper took the position of the deity and a rich man came and prayed to the Lord. He offered a nice donation and prayed that his business should be prosperous. While going, the rich man inadvertently left his wallet full of money right there. Now the sweeper in the form of deity could not call him and so he decided to control himself and keep quiet. Just then a poor man came and he put one coin in the Hundi and said that it was all he could afford and he prayed to the Lord that he should continue to be engaged in the Lord's service. He also said that his family was in dire need of some basic needs but he left it to the good hands of the Lord to give some solution. When he opened his eyes, he saw the wallet left by the rich man. The poor man thanked the Lord for His kindness and took the wallet very innocently. The sweeper in the form of the Deity could not say anything and he had to just keep smiling. At that point a sailor walked in. He prayed for his safe journey as he was going on a long trip. Just then the rich man came with the police and said that somebody has stolen his wallet and seeing the sailor 37 there, he asked the police to arrest him thinking that he might have taken it. Now the sweeper in the form of Deity wanted to say that the sailor is not the thief but he could not say so and he became greatly frustrated. The sailor looked at the Lord and asked why he, an innocent person, is being punished. The rich man looked at the Lord and thanked Him for finding the thief. The sweeper in the deity form could no more tolerate and he thought that even if the real Lord had been here, he would have definitely interfered and hence he started speaking and said that the sailor is not the thief but it was the poor man who took away the wallet. The rich man was very thankful as also the sailor. In the night, the real Lord came and He asked the sweeper how the day was. The sweeper said, "I thought it would be easy, but now I know that Your days are not easy, but I did one good thing." Then he explained the whole episode to the Lord. The Lord became very upset on hearing this whereas the sweeper thought the Lord would appreciate him for the good deed done. The Lord asked, "Why did you not just stick to the plan? You had no faith in Me. Do you think that I do not understand the hearts of all those who come here? All the donation which the rich man gave was all stolen money and it is only a fraction of what he really has and he wants Me to reciprocate with no limits attached. The single coin offered by the poor man was the last coin he was having and he gave it to Me out of faith. The sailor might not have done anything wrong, but if the sailor were to go in the ship that night he was about to die because of bad weather and instead if he is arrested he would be in the jail and he would have been saved form a greater calamity. The wallet should go to the poor man because he will use it in My service. I was going to reduce the rich man's karma also by doing this and save the sailor also. But you cancelled everything because you thought you knew My plan and you made your own plans." God has plans and justice for everyone....we just have to have patience!!!!! As per the Bhagvad Gita God says He will be pleased with all those who have the following qualities in Life : 1. Fearlessness 2. Purity of Heart 3. Steadfastness in seeking wisdom 4. Almsgiving, Charity 5. Self restraint 6. Performing religious rites 7. Study of the scriptures 8. Self discipline 9. Straightforwardness 10. Non injury or Ahimsa 11. Truth 12. Absence of wrath 13. Renunciation 14. Peace 15. Absence of fault finding and calumny 16. Compassion towards all beings 17. Non covetousness, absence of greed 18. Gentleness 19. Modesty 20. Absence of Restlessness 21. Radiance of Character 22. Forgiveness 23. Patience or fortitude 38 24. Cleanness of body and purity of mind 25. Non hatred 26. Lack of conceit Wishing all readers God's blessings in abundance and let them propagate God's greatness to all their friends and others and be in company of Good Men and Women. Reading this article would have given you immense relief, I am sure. ************* 39 Chapter 7 : Day to Day Evaluations in Astrology Vedic Astrology is a divine science which has been given to us human beings as a road map which will facilitate our journey through Life from birth to death. Then who wants day to day predictions? Those who do not wish to have them can have week to week predictions or month to month predictions or year to year predictions. The choice is yours. What we have to do for this? The exact time of birth should be noted which of course is not in your hands. But however when we know that it is possible to do predictions of life, the parents or the relatives or the doctors who preside over the birth of a child can definitely note it down when the baby after birth starts crying for the first time. This time of birth is of paramount importance in casting a horoscope which is used for all basic predictions in life using evaluation techniques like strength calculation of planets and houses. Please read the first chapter “Astrology – A New Version”. As an analogy let us consider someone is travelling from Bombay to Los Angeles on a Bicycle. He has to travel through many countries for doing so and during this time he has to abide by the rules prevalent in that country and be aware of the customs and traditions of those countries. Zodiacal signs In Astrology are analogous to countries, but here there are only 12 of them from Aries to Pisces. Different names are given by different schools of thought in Astrology. It does not matter. Using the birth chart we can calculate the strengths of each house which corresponds to each of the Zodiacal signs. And these signs are ruled by a Planet from Sun to Saturn and the nodes of Rahu and Kethu which are the intersection points of the orbits of Sun and Moon. The strength of these rulers can also be calculated using Shadbala algorithms which are reckoned in the strength of the Houses and therefore their individual strengths are of no concern to us for this exercise. Now to understand what one would experience in the journey of life in a given country, we have a Narayana Dasa in Astrology which will give us the experiences of different times or periods of our life an example of which is given below for a person who was born on 18 Feb 2014 at 9:20:25 a.m in Calicut, Kerala, India. Narayana Dasa Virgo(Kanya) : 2014-02-18 (9:20:25 am) - 2021-02-18 (2:01:42 am) Capricorn(Makara) : 2021-02-18 (2:01:42 am) - 2025-02-18 (1:16:42 am) Taurus(Vrishabha) : 2025-02-18 (1:16:42 am) - 2032-02-18 (5:57:59 pm) Gemini(Mithuna) : 2032-02-18 (5:57:59 pm) - 2040-02-18 (4:28:01 pm) Libra(Thula) : 2040-02-18 (4:28:01 pm) - 2042-02-18 (4:05:31 am) Aqarius(Kumbha) : 2042-02-18 (4:05:31 am) - 2047-02-18 (9:09:17 am) Pisces(Meena) : 2047-02-18 (9:09:17 am) - 2056-02-18 (1:28:04 pm) Cancer(Karka) : 2056-02-18 (1:28:04 pm) - 2066-02-17 (11:35:36pm) Scorpio(Vrischika) : 2066-02-17 (11:35:36pm) - 2077-02-17 (3:31:54 pm) Sagittarius(Dhanu) : 2077-02-17 (3:31:54 pm) - 2083-02-18 (2:24:25 am) Aries(Mesha) : 2083-02-18 (2:24:25 am) - 2089-02-17 (1:16:56 pm) Leo(Simha) : 2089-02-17 (1:16:56 pm) - 2095-02-18 (12:09:27am) Virgo(Kanya) : 2095-02-18 (12:09:27am) - 2100-02-18 (5:13:14 am) Capricorn : 2100-02-18 (5:13:14 am) - 2108-02-19 (3:43:15 am) Taurus : 2108-02-19 (3:43:15 am) - 2113-02-18 (8:47:01 am) Here I have not given the periods beyond the age of 99 years for this native and if you so wish can be computed very easily. 40 Now for each of these houses you can assign the strengths applicable from the evaluation chart as prepared from the horoscope chart examples of which are given in my earlier chapters. Like if the first house, house of Lagna or Ascendant, is Libra, the respective strength of first house is given to Libra sign and the strength of second house to Scorpio and so on till the 12th house strength is assigned to Virgo. Our tourist has now reached the country where we have states or provinces within that country where too the experiences could differ and this is equivalent to sub periods within main periods or Antardasas within Dasas. We will now take the Virgo main period and look at the sub periods of Virgo. Virgo (Kanya) MD : 2014-02-18 (9:20:25 am) - 2021-02-18 (2:01:42 am) Antardasas in this MD: Aquarius : 2014-02-18 (9:20:25 am) - 2014-09-19 (10:43:51 am) Pisces : 2014-09-19 (10:43:51 am) - 2015-04-20 (12:07:18 pm) Aries : 2015-04-20 (12:07:18 pm) - 2015-11-19 (1:30:44 pm) Taurus : 2015-11-19 (1:30:44 pm) - 2016-06-19 (2:54:11 pm) Gemini : 2016-06-19 (2:54:11 pm) - 2017-01-18 (4:17:37 pm) Cancer : 2017-01-18 (4:17:37 pm) - 2017-08-19 (5:41:03 pm) Leo : 2017-08-19 (5:41:03 pm) - 2018-03-20 (7:04:30 pm) Virgo : 2018-03-20 (7:04:30 pm) - 2018-10-19 (8:27:56 pm) Libra : 2018-10-19 (8:27:56 pm) - 2019-05-20 (9:51:22 pm) Scorpio : 2019-05-20 (9:51:22 pm) - 2019-12-19 (11:14:49 pm) Sagittarius: 2019-12-19 (11:14:49 pm) - 2020-07-20 (12:38:15 am) Capricorn : 2020-07-20 (12:38:15 am) - 2021-02-18 (2:01:42 am) And now within this Virgo period, we have 12 other sub periods and these will also be assigned strengths as appropriate to the zodiacal signs. Just like within a state or province, we would have districts to travel through, each of these sub periods will be further sub divided to 12 and let us have a look at the subdivisions of Aquarius sub period given above and associate the strengths of the houses to the respective sub sub periods. Vi MD: 2014-02-18 (9:20:25 am) - 2021-02-18 (2:01:42 am) Aq AD: 2014-02-18 (9:20:25 am) - 2014-09-19 (10:43:51 am) Pratyantardasas in this AD: Libra : 2014-02-18 (9:20:25 am) - 2014-03-08 (3:27:22 am) Scorpio : 2014-03-08 (3:27:22 am) - 2014-03-25 (9:34:19 pm) Sagittarius : 2014-03-25 (9:34:19 pm) - 2014-04-12 (3:41:17 pm) Capricorn : 2014-04-12 (3:41:17 pm) - 2014-04-30 (9:48:14 am) Aquarius : 2014-04-30 (9:48:14 am) - 2014-05-18 (3:55:11 am) Pisces : 2014-05-18 (3:55:11 am) - 2014-06-04 (10:02:08 pm) Aries : 2014-06-04 (10:02:08 pm) - 2014-06-22 (4:09:05 pm) Taurus : 2014-06-22 (4:09:05 pm) - 2014-07-10 (10:16:03 am) Gemini : 2014-07-10 (10:16:03 am) - 2014-07-28 (4:22:60 am) Cancer : 2014-07-28 (4:22:60 am) - 2014-08-14 (10:29:57 pm) Leo : 2014-08-14 (10:29:57 pm) - 2014-09-01 (4:36:54 pm) Virgo : 2014-09-01 (4:36:54 pm) - 2014-09-19 (10:43:51 am) 41 By now we have reached to a period of a smaller duration for e.g Libra sub sub period of Aquarius sub period of Virgo main period which lasts only for 19 days. This sub sub period of Libra can further be subdivided into 12 sub sub sub periods and so on until we reach the following last such sub divisions as follows. This is like travelling within a district there are Panchayats and within them villages and so on. Leo MD: 2089-02-17 (1:16:56 pm) - 2095-02-18 (12:09:27 am) Libra AD: 2089-02-17 (1:16:56 pm) - 2089-08-19 (4:11:19 am) Sagittarius PD: 2089-02-17 (1:16:56 pm) - 2089-03-04 (6:31:28 pm) Gemini SD: 2089-02-17 (1:16:56 pm) - 2089-02-18 (7:43:09 pm) Gemini PAD: 2089-02-17 (1:16:56 pm) - 2089-02-17 (3:49:07 pm) Deha-antardasas in this PAD: Gemini : 2089-02-17 (1:16:56 pm) - 2089-02-17 (1:29:37 pm) Cancer : 2089-02-17 (1:29:37 pm) - 2089-02-17 (1:42:18 pm) Leo : 2089-02-17 (1:42:18 pm) - 2089-02-17 (1:54:59 pm) Virgo : 2089-02-17 (1:54:59 pm) - 2089-02-17 (2:07:40 pm) Libra : 2089-02-17 (2:07:40 pm) - 2089-02-17 (2:20:21 pm) Scorpio : 2089-02-17 (2:20:21 pm) - 2089-02-17 (2:33:02 pm) Sagittarius: 2089-02-17 (2:33:02 pm) - 2089-02-17 (2:45:43 pm) Capricorn : 2089-02-17 (2:45:43 pm) - 2089-02-17 (2:58:24 pm) Aquarius : 2089-02-17 (2:58:24 pm) - 2089-02-17 (3:11:04 pm) Pisces : 2089-02-17 (3:11:04 pm) - 2089-02-17 (3:23:45 pm) Aries : 2089-02-17 (3:23:45 pm) - 2089-02-17 (3:36:26 pm) Taurus : 2089-02-17 (3:36:26 pm) - 2089-02-17 (3:49:07 pm) Here you can see the day 17th Feb 2089 is subdivided into different sub divisions of a day so low as of 13 minutes duration for Taurus Deha-antardasa and each of these antardasas have varying strengths as evaluated in the horoscope chart and you can choose the time to do your actions to those periods which has the maximum strengths and shun those sub periods where the strength is low to help us achieve fruitful results for all our endeavours. So this is how you can make best use of astrology in your day to day activities. Once these details are printed out in a book form or kept in the computers in a PDF document, every day can be started with having had a look at it and you can decide how to channelize the day to make the best out of it. Needless to say what each house represents or signifies must be borne in mind as is given in the first chapter and depending on the strength of the house, decide what should be done during the time and what should not be done. Details of Narayana dasa is there in the internet if your search for “Narayana Dasa” where many pages are devoted to explaining the axioms. Most of the astrological softwares give you these details and if you do not have one, you can get it computed by approaching astrologers who are experts in the science. ************* 42 Chapter 8 : Predictive Astrology – A Critical Review Of late, I have found tendencies among astrologers to predict each and everything using Astrology. Most of these are misinterpreting the axioms in Astrology with the sole intention of making money by cheating unsuspecting public to give them some placebo effect for their problems, some real and some imaginary. Astrology is not a predictive science and if we could predict future events with certainty, it would have been much better and we would have been living in paradise. Yes Astrology is a divine science passed on to us by great seers to give us an idea of where we stand in the order of things and to let us know the balance sheet of our deeds in earlier births, about which we are not so sure of. We can only assume that soul or life is permanent and it takes different containers or forms to carry out actions assigned to us by God which helps Him in one of His job of sustenance of this universe. There are no two births possible at the same time at the same place on any given day and this is what makes the input data to Astrology which is unique as is the nature of all creations. What is exactly the time of birth? It is the time when the baby starts crying when the breathing process is initiated and he becomes a part of this world on his own and this breathing process continues on its own till he quits this world which is an automated process totally looked after by the creator. We have no say in it. So Astrology can neither predict a birth or a death since both of them are controlled by God. The time of birth gives us a means of making a horoscope which can be used as a broad road map of one’s life where very important matters in life are charted out. It is very similar to travelling on a moonless night and the light of stars guide us through major obstacles which we can see like a wall ahead or a tree in front or a pool of water lying ahead. Minor problems like a few broken glass pieces or a sleeping dog will not be possible to be viewed. Astrology cannot be used to see the future as if in a flood light which goes against the normal beliefs of the public at large. Generally parents are very concerned when a child is born and would be anxious to know how his life is going to be. Whether he will have major ailments, how well he will perform in his studies, when and what job he will do and whether he will be successful in life, when he will get married and how long will he live and particularly whether he will look after the parents in their old age etc. And to get an answer to such mundane questions they go to an astrologer and get a horoscope made with the date, time and place of birth as the input data for such calculations. With the advent of computers now horoscopes can be prepared with ease giving details about the planetary positions, their strength, the extent to which they will be able to exercise influence in the native whether good or bad etc. which involves about 80 man hours of calculations for a human being good at Mathematics in a matter of few minutes. Unfortunately the predictions of events cannot be done using computers except of course superficially generally with no use to the public which aid them in any decision making process. For this purpose, the horoscopes have to be analyzed with meticulous care and this is where some astrologers these days resort to all sorts of gimmick often misleading the public. And the internet is full of such quacks who use this as a means of amassing wealth. Generally we find that any question put to astrologers are answered to the satisfaction of the questioner without any basis, logic or empirical analysis. What comes to their mind is what they answer and they term it as intuition which they claim to be a divine gift. They thus act as God men and make a mockery of Astrology. 43 To understand astrology well, we must have some spiritual understanding too. As I pointed out earlier our life is to carry out assignments from God and the fruitful completion of such assignments are in His interests. We act only as Screwdrivers while He holds it in His hands. The fruits of whatever we do is enjoyed by Him and we are just instruments in this regard. With this in mind, no wonder each one of us has our own definitions of life and the faculties contained therein like Personality, Wealth, Health, Happiness, Companionship, Luck, Career, Gains, Interests etc. These varying definitions cannot be generalized and what holds nice for someone may not be all that nice to you. These have to carefully borne in mind while analyzing a horoscope. For e.g. My definition of Wealth is “One who knows he has enough is Wealthy” or “Wealth is a situation where one has to spend the least for keeping himself alive and meet his obligations”. Similarly a good career is one which derives lot of job satisfaction for the native and not necessarily depends on the returns you receive from such career. Again in this materialistic world, people generally think that if one has a lot of money, he will be happy which is in fact not true. Success in marriage is not very much dependent on the beauty of the partner nor the riches he/she possesses. Is it not? Similarly marriage does not mean the rituals associated with it. Marriage is only a union of body, mind and soul and this could happen many a times in one’s life with one or more of the opposite sex. So a question “When I will get married?” has no answers in Astrology. And a question “When I will get a job?” also does not mean anything. We are born to do some job throughout of our life. And we can never sit idle even if we want to do. And no job done is unworthy, it will have some purpose. Don’t you agree? One should never think that doing a job need to be in return for money in cash or kind. People often ask in underdeveloped countries a question “Will I go abroad in my life?”. He means whether he can go abroad to another country and earn more money than he would earn working in his own country. This question also could not be answered using Astrology as the division of the world into countries are manmade and God does not endorse such divisions. But astrologers lure public by making such predictions for their own advantage. These days, Astrology is also being used to conduct Caesarean deliveries to have a baby born at the most auspicious time. To my mind, it is a futile exercise. Births and Deaths are totally controlled by God and you cannot manipulate it with the assistance of a doctor or anyone for that matter. It is misusing astrology which is a sin. Even if I can tell you a best time for conducting the Cesarean, it does not help since most often the doctors get delayed or he may have other urgent matters to attend to and it cannot be done at the desired time. And even if you are able to do it, the time of birth is the time when the baby cries for the first time and that is definitely not in the hands of anyone. And giving a date suitable is again totally meaningless since there are good times and bad times within a day which we cannot have any control on. So if nothing of the above is possible to be answered, what is the use of astrology, some people may ask. The answer to that question is “What do you get after completion of your Degree or Diploma from a University/Board of schools?”. You get a Mark Sheet detailing out the subjects studied and the Marks or Grade received after the examinations conducted to test your knowledge in those subjects. Is it not so? Yes, a horoscope can be analyzed and a mark sheet of your life can be generated using mathematical algorithms based on strengths of planets, its positioning, nature whether is beneficial or not and many other considerations which are well illustrated in ancient text books of Astrology. A sample of such an analysis is given below. 44 You can perhaps use the following grading to evaluate a horoscope. Less than 30% - Failed, failure becoming more and more as it goes down 30 to 40 - Passed, the higher the marks the better 41 to 45 - Above average 46 to 50 - Good 51 to 60 - Second Class 61 to 70 - First Class 71 to 80 - Distinction 81 to 90 - Excellent Greater than 90 - Outstanding If you look at the mark sheet given above, you will find that the native is having a net success factor of 47.44% and if interested the strength of individual houses can also be understood. And you can tune your life in such a way to opt for matters signified by houses which has a higher strength and soft pedal on matters signified by houses with a poor strength. And the most interesting thing possible would be to make subjective comparisons of other horoscope with that of yours and understand where you stand in relation to others. The ability to compare horoscopes will do well in Human Relations Departments in employing people where they work for a common goal. Matching horoscopes will definitely bring success to partnership ventures especially in marriages when the partners will be happy with each other if their horoscopes match well. 45 I am giving an example of matching two horoscopes below for marriage purpose. Here I am giving the strength of houses in a different unit called Rupas or Shasthiamsas in Sanskrit and not in percentages. If you so desire it can be converted to any other unit of measure as appropriate. These measures are only used for comparison purposes and no intrinsic definition can be there. Like when we say a tree is 42 feet tall, it only means it is 7 times your height if you are 6 feet tall. The two horoscopes of Male and Female match well with a 95.98% graded as Outstanding. The Dasas (Periods), sub periods etc. can of course be used to time certain good times and bad times. There are different schools of thought in these matters like Vimsothari Dasa and Narayana Dasa etc. Narayana Dasa is based on the houses and that would be more appropriate if you follow the above system of mark sheets which primarily is based on strength of houses which incorporates well the strength of Planets, lordships of houses, its nature and positioning and aspectual strengths. *********** 46 Chapter 9 : Marriage Failures – How Astrology can help prevent it Once upon a time Men were the predominant race and the fair sex were subordinate to them. Women had only the responsibility of giving birth to children and look after them till they became adults supervised by the male chauvinists. Till very recently they did their job very well and produced lot many children until after they reached their fifties. Men provided all their wants and were the bread winners. And chastity was considered as the best virtue of a woman even endorsed by the epics and scriptures. In this process they had to compromise a lot for being subservient to their men folk and one day it was natural that they revolted. And to the men folk WIFE became “Worry Invited For Ever”. So men started to choose their women and the main instrument in selection was a Horoscope Matching between the two. Astrology came to their rescue and it was ascertained that a woman will bring progress and happiness to men and the axioms in Astrology suited their purpose. Kuja Dosha and many other similar axioms were invented and it was all geared to the prosperity of men. I am giving an example of the definition of Kuja Dosha (Mars Affliction). “Sukhe Dhane Vyaye Vapi Ashtame Sapthame Kuja Subhadrik yogaheena cha pathim hanthi na samsaya” The above axiom means that if Mars is posted in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th houses without aspects or conjunctions of benefic planets, sure she will kill her husband. And such girls were desisted for marriage. And what about the husbands? If they had Kuja Dosha in their horoscopes, women were sacrificed so that they could marry again. So it was always a one sided affair in favour of the men. Men made it certain that women did not get any education thus ensuring that they never had the power of thinking. Then things changed and slowly the girls too started receiving education and they started to have their own say in matters regarding marriage. But the rules of horoscope matching did not undergo suitable changes and astrologers continued to follow the age old axioms in determining the compatibility of horoscopes for marriage. And the result was disappointing. These days lot of marriages do fail for want of compatibility in many essential factors of life as represented by the different houses of a horoscope and daily it is on the increase. Let us now look at the reasons for failure of marriages as per a senior marriage counsellor and a clinical psychologist Dr.Val Farmer which I am fully convinced of as a practising astrologer for more than five decades. Let us now associate those reasons with the respective houses in a horoscope. 1. Poor boundaries. Engaging in intimate conversations with members of the opposite sex leads to emotional experiences that cloud judgment, trigger fantasy life, and progress toward physical intimacies outside of marriage. The connection and acceptance found in an illicit relationship diverts energy away from solving problems with one’s spouse. Confiding about marital problems with a sympathetic listener provides a contrasting experience to whatever dissatisfactions might be present in the marriage. The seventh house of a horoscope is responsible for this. 2. Selfishness. There needs to be fairness in the distribution of work and responsibility within the relationship. This willingness to extend oneself also pertains to meeting emotional needs. Placing one’s desires consistently ahead of a partner’s emotional needs and responding only when it is a matter of convenience, demand or negotiations leaves a spouse feeling unloved. If too many important needs are neglected over time, the unloved spouse feels used or taken advantage of. Consistent lack of love interferes with a spouse’s willingness to give unselfishly in the relationship. When marriage partners 47 don’t trust their needs will be met, they tend to meet their own needs first and become hesitant to share freely of themselves. Selfishness in its most destructive form involves control, manipulation, jealousy, possessiveness, demands and abuse in order to get one’s way. In milder forms, it is lack of consideration and respect. The first house incompatibility leads to this. 3. Disrespectful judgments. Marriage needs acceptance, admiration, appreciation and emotional safety. Feelings of anger and hurt follow when the process of exploring differences or contrasting opinions consistently degenerates into criticism, impatience, labeling, contempt, or discrediting one’s thoughts or feelings. It is disrespectful to try to change a spouse’s thinking by lecture, ridicule, threats, brainwashing, or negative aspersions. These perceived attacks on personality, character, intelligence or values undermine the mutual respect that forms the basis of love. The tendency is to retaliate in kind or else to withdraw and not share one’s ideas. It becomes hard to love or give of oneself when one feels unfairly judged or mistreated. The second house is normally the culprit. 4. Explosive, angry outbursts or rages. Anger can have a useful purpose if it is listened to and leads to dialogue and constructive problem-solving. However, anger can either create more anger or withdrawal, both of which interfere with effective communications. Unbridled and unpredictable tempers interfere with emotional safety and trust when spouses need to engage each other on emotional issues. The issues behind the anger get lost as the angry response is perceived as unjust, abusive and unwarranted. It is intimidating and controlling. Again an incompatible second house produces all these. 5. Lack of emotional intimacy. The lack of sharing one feelings, goals, hurts, struggles, joys and emotional details of one’s life lead to loneliness and sadness. Feelings of friendship and partnership come from being connected through interest, deep listening and empathy, mutual support, and sharing perspectives as confidants. Expectations for marriage include a desire for this soul-satisfying experience of being known, understood, loved, accepted and valued for who you are and having a place to turn for comfort and support. If this component of marriage is lacking, marital partners feel cheated of the essence of what they truly expect marriage should provide. The fifth house compatibility negates these tendencies. 6. Lack of affection and sexual fulfilment. When needs for sex and affection are not met, problems mushroom. Without affectionate gestures and words, love seems hollow and not as believable. People don’t marry to get a roommate. They expect to have an active and fulfilling sexual life. Chronic anger and conflict dampen a couple’s willingness to be affectionate with each other. These are part of the seventh house of a horoscope. 7. Leading separate lives. Relationships also suffer when couples don’t mesh their lives through shared activities, recreational companionship or spending enough time together. Living too independently from each other takes away connection and joy from the relationship. Couples need to function as a team when it comes to parenting, managing a household, sharing finances, and relating to relatives. They need to consult with each other about important decisions and coordinate their schedules. Time needs to be set aside to enjoy conversation, adventures, common interests, vacations and fun. Time spent together should be anticipated with pleasure. Without this component, couples drift apart and have little in common. An incompatible fourth and seventh house could lead to all these. 8. Communication is a painful process. A marriage with too much conflict, hostility, blame, criticism, defensiveness, and belligerent verbal attacks seems like life with an enemy instead of a friend. Marriage needs to be a place of safety, a haven, a place of love and refuge, not a war zone. Always being “right,” being rigid, judgmental, or easily angered or flooded with emotion disrupts communication before problems can be solved. Avoidance of conflict is even a bigger problem as the emotional connection is lost when couples don’t share opinions and attempt to resolve conflict. When repeated attempts to 48 solve problems fail, one partner gives up and starts to withdraw emotionally. Beware of the sixth house and second house of the horoscope. 9. Destructive habits and addictions. Addictions have great power to be placed in front of the needs and happiness of a partner. Betrayal, hurt, anger and pain follow the wake of addictive behavior. Addictions need to be treated to protect the integrity of the marriage. You must check the eighth and twelfth house compatibility to even out these problems. 10. Dishonesty, laziness and other character defects. Basic trust and respect underlie love and form the basis of relationships. Lies, deceit, disloyalty, secret habits, or emotional dishonesty about thoughts or feelings destroy trust and respect. Spouses who willingly don’t take or follow through with their personal responsibilities unfairly shift those burdens to their partner. Marriage is a partnership between equals, not a parent/child relationship. The third and ninth houses compatibility can ensure that these problems do not happen in a relationship. Thus you can see that if two horoscopes match in respect of all the houses or at least in most of the houses, a successful marriage can be resulted with love and affection between the partners. I have devised a method of checking the compatibility of two horoscopes for any partnership venture which includes marriage as is illustrated in the following example of a compatibility report. The compatibility of each house is ascertained and the net compatibility is calculated with a suitable grading also given for evaluation purposes. 49 The Grading and scaling of the match percentage is my own based on my experience in Astrology. Here you can see in the example that there is a very good Male to Female compatibility and Female to Male compatibility resulting in a net matching of 97.21% which is an Outstanding match and the marriage can safely be possible with all round happiness. ************ 50 Chapter 10 : Horary or Electional Astrology There are times when we face a situation that how a person who does not know his date or time of birth can make use of this divine science of Astrology. In this chapter I am giving the answers to that important question for the benefit of readers. Every one of us has problems in our life sometime or other. These problems could be of varying kinds like financial problems, family problems, failure in ventures, marital issues, and health problems and so on. And to solve these problems, it is a challenge to every one of us irrespective of our status in life, rich or poor. And we have a branch called Horary Astrology also known as Electional Astrology to examine solutions and determine the success factor of such planned solutions. The basic input is identification of the problem and its classification into which one of the 12 houses used in Astrological analysis it belongs to. I am giving below the heads falling under each house for this purpose. First House (The house of Self) : The ascendant, Lagna is the most important house in a horoscope chart and plays an important role right throughout the life of an individual. It represents the physical stature, complexion, form and shape of an individual. The health, vigour, vitality and natural tendencies are controlled by this house. This also represents personality, jest for life, honour, dignity, well-being, head, upper part of the face, longevity and start in life. The second House (The house of wealth): All money matters are governed by this house. Fortune, profits and gains, power and resources, security, material achievements, jewellery, shares, security, speech, eyes, vision, stocks and bonds, precious stones, memory, education, tongue, nose, teeth, chin and family are governed by this house. This is also a maraka sthana or a death inflicting house. The third House (The house of courage and siblings) : The mental intellect and disposition is governed by his house. Courage and the ability to achieve things and complete tasks are represented by this house. Relationships with brothers and sisters, assistance or otherwise from them are also studied from this house. Relations with neighbours, valour, short travels, communications, transport, correspondence, writing, change of residence, contracts, agreements, rumours, carrying tales, hands, throat, shoulder blade, collar bones, arms and nervous system are some things that this house gives information about. The fourth House (The house of mother and pleasures) : Mother, Happiness in life, native place, residence, domestic environment, grave, private affairs, secret life, luxury vehicles, fields, pastures, farms, orchards, mines, buildings, houses, ancestral property, hidden treasure, higher education, wells, water, milk, ponds, lakes etc., Heart and Lungs are signified by this house. The fifth house (The house of progeny, romance and competition): Progeny, whether one will have children or not, of what sex, inclination, recreation, pleasure, artistic talents, entertainment, amusement, sports, excelling in competitive activities likes crosswords, cards, games of chance, gambling or betting, love affairs, ambassadors, good or bad morals, mantra, tantra, religious mindedness, higher learning and wisdom, enormous riches, spiritual practices etc. and Upper abdomen are represented by this house. The sixth house (The house of enemy and disease): Types of diseases, whether they will be curable or not, nursing, food, services, employees, subordinates or servants, debts, cattle, tenants, jealousy, enemies, maternal uncles, mental anguish, indebtedness and lower abdomen are looked into by studying this house. 51 The Seventh House (The house of marriage and partnerships) : Earthly ties and unions, legal bondage, spouse, partners in business, conjugal life, litigation, influence in foreign countries, success and reputation in foreign travels, dangers in life, relationship with spouse, gains or losses after marriage, type of spouse and his/her physical and mental disposition, Liver and small intestine are included in this house. Here foreign only means distant or unfamiliar territory. The eighth House (The house of accidents and death) : Longevity and span of life, inheritance, legacy, wills, insurance, pension, gratuity, accidents, fire or suicide, misery, misfortune, distress in life, strife, worries, disgrace, delay, dejection, disappointment, loss, obstruction, theft and robbery etc., kidney, genitals, colon, hips and portion of the body below the navel are represented by this house. The ninth House (The house of Fate and Fortune) : Faith, wisdom, divine worship, pilgrimages, philosophy, fortune, religious disposition, meditation, intuition, sacrifices and charity, father, Preceptor, learning and teaching, dreams and visions, long journeys, air and sea travel, higher education foreign travels, knees. The tenth House (The house of Career/profession): Honour, dignity, public esteem, power and prestige, credit and recognition received for a task completed, success and status, rank and renown, respect and fame, ambition, authority, permanency in job, promotion, advancement in Job, appointments. Government, political power, high posts such as President, CEO etc., last rites to parents, honour from Government etc. can be analyzed looking into this house. The eleventh house (The house of casual incomes and gains): Friends, society, community, favourites, ambitions and wish fulfilment, gain of wealth, success in undertakings, incoming wealth, prosperity, elder brothers and recovery from illness, dawn of fortune, calf and ankles are signified by this house. The twelfth house (The house of expenses and Losses) : Losses and impediments, restraint and limitation, waste and extravagance, expenses whether good or bad, deception, investments and donations, charity, misery and misfortune, sorrow and sin, secret enemies, involvement in scandals, disgrace and insults, secret sorrows. Success through occult studies and practices, the feet, left eye, left ear, bed pleasures, life and activities in foreign places belong to this house. Added to the house, the placement of planets, their lord and their placement in various houses are studied for an accurate analysis. There are various charts that are drawn to arrive at a correct conclusion. Now that we know what our problem is and to which house it relates to we can prepare a horoscope chart based on the date and time and place when your problem first came to your notice or when you started feeling the pinch of it. In other words a problem or an issue in your life is born and we note down the birth time of this problem. The solutions you might have to solve the problem can be one or many and to know which course of action has to be pursued, you can make use of Astrology just as in case of a birth of a new born baby. Here again, the horoscope is analysed and the strength of the house to which the problem belongs is analysed similar to what I had written in the earlier chapters. You will know the success factor of your intended solution. Suppose it has more than 50% strength, the solution to the problem may be effective to that extent and the more strength you have for the house, the merrier. A poor strength of below 40% could indicate failure if the intended solution is attempted. You will have to think of alternatives then and recalculate the strength of such solution at a later time of birth of the solution. 52 To cite an example, you intend to start a business and you would like to know whether you will be successful or not. First you note down the time when this idea is mooted in your mind and get a horoscope prepared for this purpose as detailed above. Starting a business obviously falls into Career/Profession house, the tenth house. And the gains there from will be shown by the 11th house, the House of Gains. If you have respectable strength for the 10th and 11th houses and if the strength of the 11th house is more than the 10th, you will certainly succeed in your new business. To what extent you will succeed can also be determined by studying the individual strengths of both these houses. It is believed that for every one of your actions, God gives you suitable directions by giving 40 odd symptoms or omens from around you to determine whether the action is going to yield favourable or unfavourable results. Unfortunately these could only be understood properly by learned astrologers. And this is the basis of Horary Astrology. It is known in Sanskrit as Prasna Marga. Astrology is a divine science and it should not be used for experimentation. For a given problem you should consult a single astrologer only with the actual birth time of the problem and getting a second or third opinion will lead you only to confusion and the varying advices could be unreliable. To test this theory you can perhaps contact a good astrologer with your problems in detail together with the date, time and place of birth of your problem and intended solutions available. The success factor can be worked out as in the case of any other horoscope. In case you do not have the date, time and place of birth details, you could give a random number of 8 digits which spontaneously comes to your mind while sincerely praying to God to show you the correct path to be followed to be successful in solving the problem. Astrology is a divine science as is Medical science. Both should not be used to make money since none can guarantee success in both the professions to anyone since results are totally dependant on one's own fate or destiny. However it is believed that these sciences will come to fruition only if the recipient reciprocates the consultant with a Dakshina or donation depending upon one's own abilities in any form either in kind or in cash as is mentioned in Vedas which should not be demanded either in quality or quantity by the Consultants. ****************** 53 Chapter 11 : Muhurta – An auspicious time to initiate actions. Muhurta is the auspicious time which holds in its embryo the fate and future of the yet to be initiated activities and we use astrological calculations for finding out such time considering the execution of the proposed activity as the birth time as is done in Horary/Electional astrology. Auspicious means promising success, propitious, opportune and favourable and obviously auspicious time implies success in the future, while propitious means favourable conditions are present, which provides means of promising or of good omen—not just special or memorable ones. As per Srimad Bhagavatham 3.14.38 which says “Because of your mind's being polluted, because of defilement of the particular time, because of your negligence of my directions, and because of your being apathetic to the demigods, everything was inauspicious”. This shows that Veda endorses auspicious time to take action or initiate an action is to your advantage to get the blessings of God invoked. So following an auspicious time to initiate any action in life is advantageous to the doer particularly if his horoscope is not sufficiently potent enough to give him fruitful results for all actions he undertakes. I mean that his horoscope has a net strength of less than 35% as evaluated by the algorithm explained in my article on “Scientific Evaluation of a Horoscope” on this site. To many, the time of birth is also not known and such people cannot have a birth chart and they can best make use of this auspicious time for all important actions in their life like initiating the studies, Vidyarambha, applying for a job after studies, marriage, starting of any project like building a house, starting a job or going abroad for business purposes and even begetting a child who is fortunate and successful in life etc. Now how do you find this Muhurta the Sanskrit word for auspicious time. Let us take an example you want to start a project of setting up a Biscuit factory and you approach an astrologer for this purpose. You will have to tell him the purpose and the approximate date and time when you wish to start this project by let us say by laying the foundation stone of the factory. The astrologer then prepares a chart based on the intended date, time and place. And he checks the strength of the planets and the houses. The net strength of the chart is worked out either manually or by using astrological software which are very common these days. If the net strength of the horoscope is more and 90%, you can say that the factory will eventually produce outstanding results. And the lower this strength is the performance of the factory will also be less in proportion. The minimum acceptable can be determined by the owner who is the winner of the fruits of labour. If he is still not happy with the success factor, he can repeat this process at a later time when conditions are more favourable. It is believed that though one is not endowed with a good horoscope, his actions still can produce good results if they are started at auspicious times. But it is fool hardy to declare a time auspicious for all purposes as is being printed in the almanacs or calendars these days. The auspicious time will vary depending on the place, time and date and there are no universal auspicious times. India when it became independent, a good Muhurta was not chosen and the strength of our birth time midnight of 15 August 1947 was only some 27% potent and that is what we are all suffering on account of now, no promising growth, no efficient leaders, fighting politicians, corrupt bureaucracy, illiterate public selfish in nature and you name it what not. 54 The calculation of net strength of a horoscope though it is time consuming to prepare if done manually, these days these can be done using computers in a matter of seconds. Therefore trial and error has become very easy and we can check many alternatives in one sitting with an astrologer. And these days I do get a number of requests from doctors, parents etc. to suggest a suitable time for caesarean delivery to be conducted. And though I do not advocate meddling in Nature and its ways, on compulsive persuasion, I had prescribed the time after studying the horoscope with the suggested time and going forward and backward to arrive at a suitable time most auspicious for this purpose, generally with a more than 80% strength for the chart at that time. In case of emergencies, these strengths have to be comprised with a lower one. And what happens. To my mind, it is a futile exercise. Births and Deaths are totally controlled by God and you cannot manipulate it with the assistance of a doctor or anyone for that matter. It is misusing astrology which is a sin. Even if I can tell you a best time for conducting the Caesarean, it does not help since most often the doctors get delayed and it cannot be done at the desired time. And even if you are able to do it, the time of birth is the time when the baby cries for the first time and that is definitely not in the hands of anyone. And giving a good date is again totally meaningless since there are good times and bad times within a day which you cannot have any control on. So, if you have a major job at hand doing which you expect to get favourable returns, always start it at the most auspicious time and you are fairly certain of victory even if your own horoscope is not that potent. The actions and the result thereof will bear fruit if started at the right time considered to be auspicious as per planetary placements and not by the star, thithi or day as is being done now in common. There are no universal auspicious times. ************* 55 Chapter 12 : Myths and Misconceptions in Astrology As a research Astrologer, I have been evaluating horoscopes for more than 50 years and I have found that there are lot of misconceptions or myths in Astrology which are used to frighten the unsuspecting public by wayside astrologers and I am quoting below what I found on one of the sites in Astrology www.astrojyoti.com the content of which I fully endorse. Misconceptions and blind beliefs in Astrology “It is highly unfortunate that in the land where Vedic astrology was born, most people, even a lot of astrologers, have a lot of misconceptions and blind beliefs about several basic facts of astrology. An astrologer propagates a wrong theory and a dozen people believe them. They tell a dozen more and soon it becomes an accepted norm! Misconceptions about Mangal dosha, Rakshasa Gana, Kalasarpa dosha and Sade sati have a lot of far reaching effects in our society full of superstitions, especially in marriage matters.” Here is how the ignorant or ill intentioned pundits take people for a ride by inducing a fear psychosis! One of the biggest misconceptions and fears in the Hindu society with respect to marriage is the presence of Mangal Dosha or Kuja Dosha in the chart of a boy or a girl. I have seen a countless number of good matches being rejected by people just because the boy or the girl has Mangal Dosha present in the chart. Even the various axioms of astrology differ as to in which houses it is present, what the exceptions are and what the effects and remedies are. According to some authorities when Mars is placed in the 1,2,4,7,8,12, from lagna causes Kuja Dosha. Some authorities omit the 1st house and some others omit the 2nd house. Some astrologers thump the table and quote Parashara and Varahamihira to prove their point. To start with most of the astrologers only have a very hazy idea of the science of astrology. On top of that, let me tell you that the existing shastras and their translations are not very pure! Take for example the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra of Rishi Parashara. In chapter 2 verse 5-7 we have the following: “Rama is the incarnation of the Sun, Krishna of the moon, Narasimha that of Mars, Buddha that of Mercury, Vamana that of Jupiter, Parashurama that of Venus, Koorma that of Saturn, Varaha that of Rahu and Matsya that of Ketu”. Sounds great. However, according to astrology Parashara was the father of Vedavyasa who wrote the Mahabharata. According to our calculations the Mahabharata period was 2500 BC to 3200 BC., or around 1200BC. according to the western historians. Buddha belonged to the much later and fairly authentically recorded period. He died in 544BC. Then how did Parashara say that Buddha is the Avatara of Mercury more than a millennium before? If he were forecasting then he would have clearly stated that “Buddha avatara will be born”. Obviously some of the people who wrote the shastras added a few things on their own! Rishi Parashara, in his Brihat Parasara Horasastra, chapter 81, verse 47 said the following: “If Mars is placed in the Lagna, 12th, 4th, 7th and 8th houses, without any aspect or conjunction of the benefic planets, the husband of such a woman will certainly have an early death.” So it is clear that if Mars has the aspect or association of a benefic, there is no dosha. It must be noted that in the very next verse, verse 48, he gave the other important exception as follows: “The yoga in which a woman takes birth and becomes a widow, if a male takes birth, he also becomes a widower. If a woman with the widowhood yoga marries a man with similar yoga, such yoga will be cancelled.” So the 2nd exception given by him is that this feared dosha is cancelled if both the girl and the boy have mangal dosha. 56 However by and large the majority of the astrologers include the 2nd house also in the mangala dosha and accept the 6 houses. As there are 12 houses in a horoscope and as Mars in 6 houses causes Mangala Dosha, it simply means that 50% of the people born have Kuja Dosha of some level. Hence it goes without saying that this Mangala Dosha is not something which will ruin a person, because it is not the intention of God to condemn half of mankind. The prevalent misconceptions are that, if a person has Martian affliction it will either ruin the marriage or will cause one’s death or the death of the partner. Especially if a girl has Kuja or Mangala Dosha, called “Mangali”, she is looked upon as a devil by the mother-in-law. Nothing can be farther than the truth. First let us examine what the Kuja Dosha is all about and how it affects marriage. The planet Mars symbolizes courage, aggression, vitality, confidence, fighting spirit and warrior qualities. If Mars is placed in any of these 6 houses, it gives aggressive tendencies to either the person or the spouse. In certain cases if Mars is malefic to the native, it also gives danger to life, provided that other bad combinations are also present. These two are the main negative qualities. Hence the first reason for the “Dosha Complex” is that – in the olden days the ideal wife was regarded as one who is meek, obedient and submissive. Hence a girl with the so called Martian afflictions, who is likely to have courage and fighting spirit, was considered by our male chauvinistic society as a girl with “Dosha”. The second possible reason for the “Dosha Complex” is that during the war torn middle ages when a lot of the sashtras were written, a “Martian person”, who is normally well built, courageous, aggressive and has fighting qualities, was a prime candidate to be recruited by the king for his army and hence the chances of his death or serious injury were quite strong. In the present changed circumstances it is foolishness of the highest order to be scared simply because one has Mangal Dosha. However, Mangala Dosha is not something that can be ignored. It does cause marital discord. Before marriage it is very essential to match horoscopes for Kuja Dosha. If a person has Kuja Dosha in the horoscope the spouse must also have Kuja Dosha. This way the Dosha is cancelled. Otherwise both should be without any Dosha. Various “authorities and experts” have given a lot of exceptions and cancellations for the Dosha. They are so many that almost everything is cancelled! The truth is that in majority of the cases the so called exceptions and cancellations do not work. A Manglik which means who has a strong Mars in 7th, 8th houses and some other houses like 2nd,12th, 4th with reduced influences need not kill a partner with whom you have sex. The general rule is given below for a potent Mars in the 12 houses of a horoscope. First House : The native's married life will be full of enthusiasm, have strong sexual urges and will never be satisfied in sex. He enjoys sex life greatly and fully demonstrates his love and affection to his partner and will require constant love and affection from partner. Second House : The native will be aggressive and crude in sex matters. He / She has very burning and deep feelings for partner but does not exhibit them. Third House : The native will be very determined to have good and healthy sex with the partner. He / She will be courageous and considerate in sex matter but fails to demonstrate. Fourth House : The native will have extensive sexual relationship with the partner and will be lustfully inclined and selfish in the relationship. They have deep attachment with the partner. Sixth House : The native will not be sex crazy. Sex will be a normal routine for him / her. Native will not have much regards for partner as far as sex is concerned. 57 Seventh House : The native will be fond of sex and too demanding in sex and may indulge in indiscreet sex life. The native will be romantic also. Eight House : The native will have too much sex-indulgent, indiscriminate in sex and greatly attached to principles and morals of married life. Ninth House : The native will be very moderate and considerate to partner in sex habits. The native will not regard sex as a driving force in life. Tenth House : The native will be methodical and touchy in sex matters. The native will be fond of pornography and very conscious of successful sex act. Eleventh House : The native has craving for sex but do not show openly and easily satisfied. They attach more importance to health and have a saintly outlook, though in thoughts they are sex- crazy. Twelth House : The native will be quick and restless in sex behaviour. They even use unnatural methods of sex or have perverted sex. The native will be careless about partner's feelings. Now if the above effects has to materialise in full, Mars should be placed in the Bhavamadhya, i.e. in the middle of the house as per the Bhava chart. This is where the residential strength come into effect. So if you are a Manglik, you should first ascertain how potent your Mars is and then moderate the above effects in proportion. And if your partner also has such an inclination with a matching potency of Mars, that is a cancellation of the "MangalDosha" as is erroneously called in astrology. It is a state of physical and mental urge with respect to Sexual matters. A dissatisfied sexual experience with your partner leads to renunciation of sex and that is what leads to a divorce and this need not necessarily be discontinuance of living together. 'A Manglik will kill her spouse' is just a metaphorical usage and it will never happen so. It is just a literal translation of the last line of the related axiom "pathim hanthee na samsaya". So do not worry about too much on those counts and Mangal Dosha is not to be used to exorcise a woman. And remember if the groom has Mangal dosha, will not the bride die? And in a male chauvinistic society that was not a problem. Today both men and women are equal in status and financial independence and a girl like you should not bother about such trivial things. A proper matching of horoscopes will take care of such incompatibilities and warn you in advance. You are then at liberty to have a relationship or not. As per the koota matching system, my advise is to give more importance to dina, gana, rasi, yoni and rajju and less to the others. So much so for the nadi dosha fear! The matching of horoscopes and especially the extent of Mangala Dosha is the job of an experienced astrologer and must be done after carefully analyzing both the horoscopes. Rakshasagana (Asuragana) The second major misconception while matching horoscopes of marriage is Rakshasagana. Once again this becomes a highly objectionable thing in case of a girl. While matching horoscopes for a marriage under the Koota matching system, the birth stars in which the Moon is placed at the time of birth, called Janma Nakshatra, in which the bride and bridegroom are 58 born, are analyzed and matched for various compatibility factors. One of them is the Ganas of the nakshatra. All the 27 Nakshatras come under 3 groups. They are Deva Gana, Manushyagana and Rakshasagana. If both bride and bridegroom are born in the same Gana then the matching is supposed to be the best. So the best combination is Deva-Deva, Manushya – Manushya and Rakshasa-Rakshasa. In the Gana matching this combination gets 4 out of 4 points. The next best is between Deva-Manushya and Manushya-Rakshasa. This gets a score of 2 out of 4 points. The last and worst combination is DevaRakshasa which gets a score of 0 out of 4 points. This is as per the detailed South Indian Dasha Koota matching system. In the North Indian Ashtakoota Matching system the Gana matching is allotted 6 points and you get either 6, 3 or 0. Unfortunately too much importance is given to this Gana matching because of two reasons. Firstly as in case of Mangala Dosha, the person born under Rakshasagana has more confident and aggressive tendencies and hence this becomes a major taboo for a girl. Secondly a good Gana matching enhances prosperity. However, what the average public and even a lot of astrologers fail to take into account is the fact that, out of the total 35 point Koota matching, the Gana matching carries only 3 points. What is even more important is the fact that out of the 9 planets we are only taking into account the Ganas of the stars in which the Moon is placed at birth and totally ignoring the Ganas of the stars in which the balanced 8 planets are placed. Hence it is foolhardy to attach too much importance to Gana dosha. Sadesati One of the most terrible periods, according to the believers in astrology, is the dreaded 7-1/2 years of Saturn transit called “Sadesati” in North India and “Elinatishani” in South India. When the transiting Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses from one’s Rasi, i.e., where one’s Moon is placed in the birth chart, it is called Sadesati. ( Saturn takes 30 years to make one round of the zodiac hence 2-1/2 years in each sign multiplied by 3 = 7-1/2 years). While it is true that during this 7-1/2 years Saturn transit period people do experience some tensions and troubles, it is nothing to be scared about. On an average every man has to go through at least 2 sadesatis during his life time. The results of the sadesati transit vary considerably from person to person depending on the planetary configurations in one’s birth chart. Even while giving some troubles and tensions, it does not deny you success. For example when Mrs. Indira Gandhi became a Cabinet Minister for Information and broadcasting in 1964, she was going through her Sadesati! In January 1966 when she became Prime Minister she was still going through her Sadesati!! There are thousands of people who not only got away scot-free during sadesati, but actually prospered during it. All kinds of dreadful results are forecast by the astrologers to scare the people and apart from living under fear; people spend a lot of money quite unnecessarily on all kinds of remedies. Actually the pundits love Saturn, Mangal, Rahu and Ketu, the fearsome four names in Indian astrology, as they have given more money to them by way of remedies than the benefics like Jupiter or Sun! There are plenty of remedies for sadesati, the most effective being the daily reciting of Hanuman Chalisa or the Dasaratha Shani stotra. Saturn, which according to Hindu mythology is the son of Sun God, is an excellent planet. No other planet can give what Saturn can. In fact having a well placed saturn in ones chart is one of the best things to hope for! When Mrs. Indira Gandhi was re-elected PM, she was going through the mahadasa of Saturn. When Amitab Bachan was at his peak, he was also going through Saturn mahadasa. Unfortunately people and the pundits ignore the positive side of Saturn and project it only as an evil planet. 59 Kalasarpa dosha: This is another highly feared combination. You will be surprised to know that the ancient classics of astrology have not even mentioned it! Yet it has become one of the most feared doshas, because Kal means death and Sarpa means snake. When all planets are to one side of Rahu and Ketu Kalasarpa Dosha is supposed to be caused. This is considered a very bad yoga which gives rise to misfortunes and is supposed to be a major obstruction to ones progress. This dosha is said to be severe when all planets are within the arc from Rahu to Ketu in their natural motion direction. There are supposed to be 12 types of Kalasarpa doshas, based on the placement of rahu from the lagna to the 12th house. These 12 have been named after 12 fearful sounding snakes: Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhapal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkataka, Shankhanaad, Patak, Vishakata and Sheshanag. It is not known who cooked up this nonsense, but rest assured that it is none of the Rishis from Parashara to Varahamihira. Obviously some new 20th century “Rishis” of Northern India!! The latest astro-stunt by the “Pundits” is the introduction of “partial kalasarpa dosha”. The basics parameters of this are undefined, so anyone may have it!! A lot of unscrupulous astrologers are scaring people about this dosha and extracting money for the so called remedies. The remedy of course depends and varies according to the financial status of the innocent man! From practical point of view this is not found to be a hindrance to progress. I have the horoscopes of a lot of people who have this so called dosha and are doing quite well in life. One of the most notable exceptions is the horoscope of Jawaharlal Nehru, the late prime minister of India. If someone can rise to that level with kalasarpa yoga, then its not a bad one really!!” Yogas or Combinations Most astrologers pacify their customers telling them that they have Yogas in their horoscope. There are more than 300 combinations in Astrology. Some of the best yogas are Gaja Kesary Yoga, Rajayoga, Vipareetha Rajayoga and Pancha mahapurusha yogas and Neecha bhanga rajayoga. These yogas manifest when planets are placed in certain quardrants or trines, while in exaltation or debilitation or having some particular positioning in the horoscopes which are well founded by mathematical logic. Unfortunately astrologers hardly tell their customers the strength of these yogas in their horoscope and they are generally led to believe that it has 100% strength. But in most cases, it is not so and astrologers do not bother to calculate or are unaware of how to calculate the strength of these yogas. But to the clients, it is soothening to hear that they have Yogas in their horoscopes and are well pleased on hearing it. Most of the yogas are a myth if it does not have at least some 35% strength. Human beings generally tend to emulate celebrities who are either people holding high positions or laurels to their credit. It does not mean that all celebrities have excellent horoscopes. Many of the successful politicians have a weak horoscope and what they excel in is only in one of the fields or astrologically telling one of the houses. Many of the politicians have a weak moral, some very corrupt and some rather illiterate but have the inherent capacity to lead people. Many of the celebrities have a weak marital bliss or a poor heath or a very unsatisfactory family life. Is Death an Unpleasant Experience Anything which goes out from your body like Phlegm, Pus, Gas, vomiting etc. produces relief which is something which creates happiness. You feel relieved after such throwing outs from the body. How a 60 mother is relieved and is happy when the baby is delivered! And similarly sweating when it is very hot gives you relief when the sweat comes out through the pores of the skin. And while your bladder is full, urine, when it goes out, you enjoy it and the same is true while defecating. While having sex when the semen is ejaculated, you have the height of happiness associated with some ecstatic movements of your body. And logic says that anything which goes out from the body, you are provided with happiness to accompany it and Death is your life going out of your body, in other words Life gets a release from the bondage of human body and that is the most ecstatic of all happiness. So never worry about Death. That is the most pleasant experience one could ever have in life. Wearing Navaratna Ring for propitiating Planets. I have found thousands of people wearing a Navaratna ring with all the nine precious stones embedded in it thinking that all the nine planets will bless them simultaneously and they can rise in life and live happily thereafter. Wearing a gem if at all it is useful to make a planet potent, wearing all of the gems to make all planet potent is tantamount to taking multivitamin tablets little realising that if you have satisfactory levels of any vitamin, the body has to exert too much to throw out the excess of vitamins through your kidney thus adding pressure to the human system and this makes the body weaker and it will have the opposite effect of what you expect to happen. So is wearing a Navaratna Ring which will be counterproductive in all cases. Beware Astrology is only good for evaluating yourselves and you cannot improve upon it by doing anything. You are just being forewarned about your life and you have to tune it accordingly to accept both defeat and success with the same ease. After all you live only for 33 seconds as per the Cosmic Clock when you say the average life span is about 75 years of earthly life. Mahabharata War fought in Kurukshetra Most of the Hindus would have read the epic Mahabharata and would definitely would have heard about the Kurushetra War between Pandavas and Kauravas. In fact there was never such a war. It was a symbolic war between good and evil within our mind. Pandavas represented the Good senses and Kauravas represented the evil senses. Do read the book "God talks with Arjuna THE BHAGAVAD GITA written by SriSri Paramahansa Yogananda which is available on Flipkart and Amazon. Wishing all the readers of this article the best of health and wealth and whatever they wish for. ************ 61 Chapter 13 : Medical Astrology This article is also a sequel to my previous articles on Astrology. As I have been receiving mails asking me how we can make use of the strength of houses of a horoscope in determining the health of an individual and the vulnerable parts of his body and what care could be taken to prevent any serious problems with such weak organs. To understand this issue better we should know which organs and diseases are signified by the 12 houses of the horoscope. The First House : The head and the face are the main parts of the body denoted by the first house. It involves the complexion, cranium, forehead, brain, hair, pituitary glands, etc. If the first house in our natal chart is weak then it results in a sickly constitution, thereby leading to headache, mental tension, paralysis, giddiness, wounds, scars, erratic activity of endocrine glands, derangement, brain fever, stupidity, nose bleeding, etc. The Second House : Throat and the ears are the main parts of the body signified by the second house. It generally rules the organs like nose, throat, mouth, tongue, teeth and eyes, especially the right one, facial bones, upper neck and its bones, gullet, larynx, cerebellum, trachea, cervical region and cervical bones, tonsils, etc. Implication of poor digestion, disorders of speech, throat, cervical, gums, eyes, teeth, etc., and diseases mainly arising out of a weak venous system shows a weak second house in your natal chart. The Third House : Shoulders, arms, the collar bone, hands, lungs and the nervous system are the main parts of the body denoted by the third house. The lower neck, shoulders, arms, ears hands, shoulders, collar bones, thyroid gland, respiratory and nervous systems are ruled by the third house. A birth chart showing a weak third house brings problems of respiratory canal, disorders of thyroid, imbalances in the nervous system, depression resulting in partial paralysis, stammering, shoulder pains, fracture in the collar bone region, partial deafness, respiratory diseases, asthma, tuberculosis, etc. The Fourth House : Digestive organs, stomach and breasts are the organs governed by the fourth house. If the fourth house is weak in your horoscope it results in coronary problems, physical ailments of breast, chest, heart and lungs’ disorders, mental disorders, lunacy and the problems connected to the circulatory systems. Affliction of the fourth house by the sign of fire and when under aspect by Mars indicates surgery in digestive systems whereas with watery sign affliction, diabetes and diet restrictions are likely. The Fifth House : The fifth house rules the body parts like heart, upper belly, stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen, colon, diaphragm, spine and spinal cord, pregnancy, etc. Diabetes, peptic ulcers, anaemia, colic pains, stones in gall bladder, acidity, spinal cord disorders, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, pleurisy, heart problems, etc. are implications of weakness of the fifth house. If the 5th house is afflicted with airy sign it leads to mental illness, lunacy etc. The Sixth House : Diseases related to body parts like waist, navel, lower abdomen, kidneys, small intestine, upper part of large intestine, intestinal function, appendix are mainly due to a weak sixth house in your birth chart. It is related to sickness like appendicitis, poisoning, constipation, hernia, blood urea, psychiatric problems, exhaustion and nervous breakdown. The sixth house afflicted with moon makes a wild tempered person or a lunatic whereas Venus affiliation gives sexual disorders, dysfunction of sex glands and sterility. Similarly when Mercury affiliates the sixth house it gives loss of memory, dull head and idiocy. The Seventh House : The various body parts ruled and governed by the seventh house are the ovaries, kidneys and lower half of the back, pelvic girdle, lumbar region, bladder, lower part of large intestine, 62 inner sexual organs uterus, cervix, testicles and prostate gland, etc. Thus a horoscope with afflictions in the seventh house results in venereal diseases, arthritis, gout pains, urination problems, impotency, sterilization, renal problems, nervous and psychological problems, sexual disorders, venereal diseases etc. The Eighth House : The various parts of the body under the control of the eighth house are the sex organs, bladder and the muscular system, scrotum and anus, outer sexual organs, excretory organs, pelvic bones, etc. Saturn posited in the 12th house, with the lord of 8th in the 2nd house premature death is indicated. Health disorders like fissure, impotency, piles, urinary infections, boils, chronic diseases, etc. are due to a weak eighth house. The Ninth House : The parts of the body ruled by the ninth house are thighs, left leg, thigh bones, bone marrow, hips, hip joints and the arterial system. Therefore a weak ninth house indicates low productivity of blood, thalasemia, leukaemia, high fevers, diabetes, rheumatism and troubles in hips and thighs, etc. Fracture of knee joint or knee cap is possible with an afflicted 9th house with Sun’s aspect. The Tenth House : The tenth house is involved in governing the body parts like knee and kneecaps, joints and bones. Health related problems like arthritis, broken knees, inflammation of joints, general weakness, skin diseases and allergies, emaciated body, etc. are due to a weak tenth house. The Eleventh House : The eleventh takes care of the body organs like shanks, ankles, shin bone, right leg, left ear and left arm. Circulatory problems, fracture of the lower portion of legs, pain in legs, problems of low productivity of blood, cancer of leg, etc. generally happens when the birth chart of an individual shows a weak eleventh house. The Twelfth House : The organs under the control of the twelfth house are left eye, lymphatic system and feet. A weak twelfth house causes sleep disturbances and weakens the immunization power. These classifications of diseases and its attributes to the different houses are only extracts from the old books on this subject and lot of research need to be done before finalizing on these theories. Unfortunately the usefulness of Astrology in medicine has not been fully understood and warrants in depth study of this subject. However it is certain that the various houses in Astrology has close relationship with the different parts of the body and a study of the strengths of the houses will help us finding out the weak parts of the body and treatments could be carried out using Ayurveda without causing any side effects as opposed to Allopathic treatments. I would go to the extent that along with the lab reports of patients, the horoscope also should be looked into which would help in diagnosis of diseases and possibly the times during which the manifestations of possible diseases could be identified. Again the inputs needed are the Date, Time and place of birth of an individual and a horoscope can be charted out detailing out the strength of the houses in a matter of minutes using an Astrology software. I am giving below an example of the horoscope of a very famous film actor who has a lot of health problems and related mental problems. 63 You can see only two houses have got a Passed grading the 2nd and 11th houses. He has innumerable health problems but he happens to be rich and therefore still living with the help of outstanding professionals of the medical science. Needless to say Astrology can well be used in the medical science too. Not necessarily all findings in Astrology need be true, but that is true with all sciences like Meteorology, Medical Science, Stock Markets, Geology, Space technology which are beyond the realm of real understanding. When in doubt, go to Astrology like in rummy when in doubt go the pack. 64 The above picture gives you the different parts of the body and the planets ruling them. The strength of the planets indicate how good or otherwise are those parts and due care could be taken to protect them on our own. ************** 65 Chapter 14 : Astrology – Science or Superstition? All of us are curious to know our future. Whenever we are in difficulties and cannot easily tide over it, we want to know whether the days of our miseries will ever come to an end at all. And if so, then when will it happen? When someone invests a great deal of time, effort or money into a project, it is natural to wonder whether that investment will bear fruit and bring profits in. There have always been people around who have successfully predicted future events. Their methods have been different - some people can simply look into the future, some use tarot cards, some draw up an astrological chart which we call horoscopes, some read the lines in the palms of people. One cannot deny that future has been accurately predicted many a times and by many a people. Each successful prediction proves that it is indeed possible to correctly predict the future. But the chances of a correct prediction had only a 50% probability. In the olden days, astrologers were held to be in great esteem by the people. Astrology was a synonym of Astronomy. There was no difference between astronomers and astrologers. You will be surprised to know that most of the renowned scientists of the past, including Sir Isaac Newton, were astrologers too. Predictive Astrology known as Jyothish Shastra was handled by great mathematicians. An accomplished astrologer was one who could see past, present and future. It would perhaps not be untrue to say that Astrology was considered to be one of the foremost branches of science similar to Ayurveda particularly in the Indian sub-continent. Decline of Astrology as a Science It is a fact of life that people emulate successful, popular and respected persons. Seeing the social status enjoyed by astrologers, charlatans started masquerading as astrologers. They learnt a few tricks of the trade and started duping gullible people. It was and still is a very lucrative business. An astrologer earns money by making predictions while giving no guarantee that any of his predictions will turn out to be true. No money back guarantee is offered. Once an astrologer sets up shop, people start coming to him in the hope that, may be he will be able to foresee their future correctly. The astrologer is in a wonderful position. For example, he may make predictions about ten persons, getting only one prediction right. The nine persons, about whom he predicted wrongly, will never come back to him. But the tenth person, about whom the astrologer was able to predict correctly will not only come back to him again but also refer many other persons to him, citing personal experience. In this way, the business of an astrologer always flourishes, no matter how he himself fares in his trade. But the downside of this was that astrologers, as a group, started being seen as a lot of dubious persons like politicians of the modern age. Once such an impression started gaining ground, Astrology as a subject no longer remained attractive to intelligent persons. Talented people started to pursue other fields of knowledge. Over a period of time, the inevitable happened. No talent, worth its salt, chose to pursue Astrology as a vocation or a hobby and the outcome of this is for everyone to see in these days. Internet is full of such quacks. There was one more very important reason for Astrology becoming one of the lesser fields of knowledge. It was the decline of India, the fountainhead of human civilization, and its loss of status as the repository of all the knowledge of the ancient world. The Islamic hordes who attacked and looted India off and on and later ruled the country for hundreds of years, had no respect for priceless works of art, the magnificent architecture and the other exalted areas of human endeavour. They destroyed most of the ancient temples, burnt down libraries like Nalanda and Takshshila and took away innumerable books of infinite wisdom for the future generations of humanity. A great amount of recorded knowledge was thus lost, astrological books included. The few people, who had some invaluable texts and scriptures with them, were hard put to preserve the remaining works passed on to us by the ancient sages. That is why, when one studies Astrology, he feels as if some vital links are missing. With the Hindu 66 philosophy losing its ground it was natural that Astrology would lose its prominent place too. As the modern science developed and the scientific temperament gained ground, with the dearth of genuine astrologers, Astrology started fading into oblivion. The criticism and The defence Astrology is scoffed at by people for two main reasons. First, of course, is that the predictions made by astrologers often go wrong. Secondly, if one takes a horoscope to different astrologers, they make different predictions. They even make different horoscope charts given the same birth details like date, time and place. These sort of variations led people to believe that Astrology is not a science and that it is only a means to dupe the unsuspecting public. One cannot deny that the reasons cited above are valid. Nonetheless, there is some element of prejudice against Astrology which also plays some part in the denigration of this subject. Let us take an example to illustrate this point. A man falls sick due to some disease. He goes to his neighbourhood doctor. The doctor advises him to go for some tests. After seeing the results of those tests and considering the patient's symptoms, the doctor concludes that the man has contracted some particular disease. He prescribes some medicines and the patient goes home in the hope of getting cured as soon as possible. After taking the medicines for next two days, the patient finds that the medicines are not working to his advantage. He goes back to the doctor and the doctor changes the medicines and the person starts responding to the second set of medication immediately. Within a few days, the person is back to his old healthy self. What would have happened if the person had not responded to that second set of medicines? Most probably he would have gone to another doctor. That doctor would have advised him to go for more tests, diagnosed his problem as per his own knowledge and experience and treated him accordingly. Again, there would have been the same probability of the patient getting cured or not. So, in the end it boils down to the problem of correct diagnosis. When the disease is identified correctly, it can be treated successfully. The doctor's problem is to diagnose the disease correctly, given the symptoms and the results of the tests conducted. Often these diagnoses do go wrong with the diminishing values of education given out by institutions that run it as a business with a profit motive. There is one more element which may mar the chances of the patient getting better: the test results. If the lab conducting those tests makes a mistake, the doctor is bound to be misled by the results. It has also been observed many a times that even with the same symptoms and the same set of test results; different doctors diagnose the problem differently. The same thing, when happening in the context of Astrology , is proffered as a proof that it is not a science. When a doctor makes a mistake, his skills are blamed not on the Medical Science. But if an Astrologer fails, it is Astrology which is the cause and they call it a pseudo-science. When doctors arrive at varying conclusions on the basis of identical test results, why astrologers should be an exception. If you take the blood samples of the same patient to different labs, you are almost certain to find differences in their findings. If the machines built with all our scientific knowledge at our disposal make mistakes, no one denigrates modern science itself. But when it comes to Astrology, people are only too ready to dismiss it as a farce. Perhaps, by doing this, people want to prove that they have, what is called, a scientific temperament. Why Astrologers go wrong in their prediction? Mr.A.K.Gupta, a renowned astrologer suggests: 67 Lack of knowledge: This is perhaps the foremost reason. Most of the astrologers, after learning a bit, find it difficult to resist the temptation to start making predictions. A certain percentage of their predictions do turn out to be true since they have learnt a little bit of Astrology after all. They cannot hold themselves back from showing off their half-baked knowledge. Another reason is the temptation to start reaping, as soon as possible, the fruits of their efforts made in learning the subject. Once the customers start flocking to them, they lose the urge to keep learning further. Also, they are left with little spare time to make further learning possible. They get too busy duping people. Lack of Talent: In modern times, since the pursuit of this subject is not considered very respectable, persons of genius do not take up the study of Astrology. They would rather prefer to become scientists, engineers, doctors, authors, artists etc. This does not help the development of Astrology nor does it help add to the knowledge or find the missing links in this subject. Currently, there are no serious research projects being conducted related to this field. Thus the base of knowledge does not get updated or widened. Incorrect Data: As the very basis of Astrology is purely mathematical, the data such as time of birth etc. must be accurate. If this data is incorrect, the horoscope and consequently the interpretation or evaluation would be bound to be faulty. The position of cusps, house divisions, and the planetary positions at any given moment needs to be accurate too. The many ephemerises differ from each other so much so, that it seems incredible. One must follow the most accurate data (for example, from NASA) for calculations, in this age of computers. Normally, astrologers tend to take the easy route, that of following some ready reckoner sort of things, leading to inaccuracies in their calculations. Destiny of the subject: It may so happen that the fate of the person who wants his future read, does not favour the person in knowing his future. This idea may seem farfetched but it is not. Even in modern times, with all the development in medical science, patients keep dying of fully curable diseases. If a person is destined to die of pneumonia, he will, in spite of the fact that millions of people around the world are successfully treated for it every year. If fate can play a role here why cannot it play the same role in Astrology too? The very nature of Future: Modern science divides the universe in two parts: known and the unknown. It is believed that whatever is unknown today, will become known tomorrow. Over a period of time, everything will become known. But the enlightened sages have said that certain aspects of the existence are beyond the scope of our knowledge. These things do not belong in the domain of human knowledge. Certain aspects of future also belong to the same domain. Anyone, who will study Astrology with an open mind, cannot dismiss it as something without merit. It is an easy task for astrologers to correctly tell certain things about a man, such as his physical characteristics, diseases he is likely to get afflicted with, his temperament, his overall success in life in terms of money he earns or fame he achieves, the nature of his profession etc., simply by looking at his correctly drawn horoscope and calculating the strength of the horoscopes which has become possible with the advent of computer programs. It is in the matters of details and the timing of events that astrologers tend to go awry. What is needed is a fresh approach to the subject. Brilliant minds should take it up for study, correct some anomalies and misconceptions which this science has acquired over the long past. Only then this subject can regain its rightful place as a serious and important branch of knowledge. What is Science : Science (from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. In an older and closely related meaning, "science" also refers to a body of knowledge itself, of the type that can be rationally explained and reliably applied. 68 Today Astrology is also a science. If the input data like the date, time and place of birth is given the horoscope charts can be correctly calculated using reliable data supplied by NASA and the strength of a horoscope can be evaluated with the aid of high speed computers in a matter of minutes and there are no chances of errors in the calculations as had been experienced while astrologers calculated and prepared a horoscope manually working hours together when he was prone to making errors. Yes regarding predictions, astrology can only evaluate a horoscope and say something about the course of destiny which it will take in the life of an individual. Unlike in medical science, there are no medicines to be prescribed but can only be properly counselled as is being done in a psychiatric treatment which might include meditation, yoga or praying to God or following a routine etc. In my other articles in this book, I have elaborated how well these calculations can be done with samples of final reports. Different branches of astrology like Horary Astrology and Medical astrology, Horoscope matching etc. are fully discussed. Yes, to get a horoscope prepared and evaluated, one has to learn Astrology or contact a learned Astrologer who has access to the Astrology Software and a Computer at his disposal. They are not freely available and so you will have to pay for the services as you would do when you go to a hospital for treatment. Of course the Government can set up institutes offering astrological services free of charge if they wish to do so. ********************** 69 Chapter 15 : What is Life and Why we are here – An astrological perspective The Earth is a miniscule grain of sand in this Universe where more than 6 billions of humans and innumerable other creatures are living in, each of them interacting with each other. Life on earth would have been impossible without these mutual interactions. We are all interdependent in some form or other. We are completely dwarfed by the infinity of time and space – so how can anything we do be of any significance whatsoever? Albert Einstein once said "A human being is a part of a whole, called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty and abundance." Destiny determines what forces influence our lives to ensure we encounter the life experiences that we require for our continued development. Destiny is essentially a series of opportunities that enable us to learn lessons, acquire new abilities, develop our consciousness and help others. We use the word Fate with a slightly negative tone which more or less represents destiny itself in the form of Karma or Action. We are in control of our destiny but have no control over our fate. Destiny cannot be forced on us. If we are forced then it is our fate. Destiny gives us an opportunity to turn a situation to our advantage and accomplish something great through our own efforts. It is designed to give us the best opportunities for the development of our consciousness, but it is only an outline – not an exact script. It doesn't detract from our freewill in any way, because we decide exactly how we want to act in any situation. The basic outline for our life is planned (pre-destined) before we were born to give us the right opportunities for growth. But we don't have to follow the pre-destined route if we don't want to. A life plan can be compared to a maze, and our life's purpose is to complete the maze. We don't know where we are going or where we will end up, so all we can do is make our way through life using our best judgment. Every wrong turn leads to a dead end and every correct turn leads to progress. A correct turn may not correspond to success in the physical sense, for example: failing to get a promotion may not seem like the best outcome from a financial perspective, but it might actually be the best outcome for the development of your consciousness. We all occasionally make what appear to be bad decisions, but if we learn from those seemingly wrong decisions we eventually discover that they were in fact right decisions. If we deviate from our life's plan we may need to be coaxed back on to the right track, and the further we stray from the optimal path the harder the lessons get. Every choice we make affects our future and therefore our destiny. Right now we are experiencing the destiny (and the karma) that arose from choices we made in the past. Human destiny is largely decided by the planetary interactions. Individual human destiny is largely decided by our guardian angels. And this is what is shown in a Horoscope chart. The more evolved we are the more input we have in deciding our destiny, and the more important it becomes to our development. Our guardian angels can only guide our destiny to the extent that we allow them. The sensible option is to give them complete control because they are far more advanced than we are and they know what is best for us, but most people are egotistical and think that they know better. Mankind is not developed enough to determine its own destiny – that much is evident from the state of the world today. And it is in this context Astrology comes to our rescue to indicate to us what the overall plan of our destiny is and how to use it to our advantage by our own Karmas as dictated by destiny. 70 Karma is a Sanskrit word meaning "action", but is generally understood to mean the consequences of one's actions. The word "karma" is commonly used to indicate bad karma, and the word "merit" is often used to indicate good karma. The law of karma is best described as "cause and effect" because every action (or cause) has a corresponding consequence (or effect). If you plant good causes you will reap good effects, and if you plant bad causes you will reap bad effects. In each of our lives in the cycle of births and deaths we acquire some bad karma and some good karma and we suffer the consequences of some of our previous bad karma and reap the benefits of some of our previous good karma. During the early stages of our human evolution we all acquired large amounts of bad karma which were to be gradually endured off. Because many people still have much more bad karma than good, seemingly favourable circumstances often have a sting in their tail. This is evident from the tumultuous lives of some of the celebrities and the people whose lives have been ruined by unexpected gains like winning a raffle or something similar. Think of your karma as having two bank accounts – one for good karma and one for bad karma. Good karma can either be "spent" on pleasurable life circumstances or it can be used to "pay off" some of our bad karma. Less-educated people nearly always choose the first option; whilst better educated ones usually choose the second. This explains some of the iniquities of life where honest and hardworking people live in poverty whilst selfish and corrupt people live a life of opulence. When a less-developed person chooses to spend all their good karma in one go they will enjoy wealth, power or fame for few years or perhaps an entire lifetime, but once their good karma is used up they will be relegated to many future lives of poverty and suffering. The real sting is that an undeveloped person usually generates more bad karma in a prosperous life than they do in a poverty-stricken life because the money, power or fame goes to their head and makes them more egotistical and unpleasant. The strength of the individual houses in your horoscope helps you in this regard whether to what extent you should utilize your blessings for and how to keep away from evil thoughts and desires. The belief that Wealth and abundance are gifts from God – signals that he is pleased with us and has blessed us is completely wrong. God does not have favourites and our financial status is of no concern to him. Wealth is the result of good karma or merit, the result of "good investments" we made in previous lives. The Bible describes karma as "The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them. We reap what we sow. Let's not forget the stories of Chitragupta or St.Peter standing at the pearly gates weighing our good deeds against our bad ones. Karma exists to protect us and to guide us back on track when we go astray. But karma is often slow to respond and, because of its intimate relationship with destiny, often waits until a future life is taken. The delayed effect of karma explains how non-smokers can end up getting lung cancer. They were probably smokers in a previous incarnation but their good karma or destiny in that incarnation prevented them from suffering the consequences at the time. We never know how long ago we acquired the karma that is manifesting in our lives today, and we never know how or when the karma we create today will manifest its consequences. This is because karma works behind the scenes – we only see the effects in the physical world and have no idea of the causes that are operating out of sight in the subtle worlds. Karma and destiny are woven into the very fabric of our lives to the extent that the average person barely notices their effects. Wilfully and knowingly transgressing the laws of life generates a lot more negative karma than unintentional or ignorant transgressions. The more developed we are the more responsibility we have, so the consequences of abusing the laws of life are more severe. Although bad karma usually results in suffering, it is not a punishment for punishment's sake; nor is it divine retribution. Karma is simply an opportunity to make good – it neither punishes nor rewards; it simply guides. The law of karma is not 71 the cause of suffering; it is merely the agent. Most of human suffering originates from the simple fact that we cannot and do not want to control our subtle bodies. Karma is self-balancing divine justice; it is totally fair and absolutely infallible. It doesn't matter if a criminal seems to "get away with it", because there is no getting away with it – karma will eventually catch up with him. If we are honest with ourselves, wanting justice is just a nice way of saying that we want revenge. If we suffer as a result of someone else's wrongdoing we want them to suffer in return. But we need to learn that vengeance is not the same as justice, and that an act of vengeance will result in bad karma for ourselves. Even holding onto vindictive thoughts, self pity or grief prolongs our own suffering and generates more bad karma. If something unpleasant happens to us we should realize that we caused it, not the person who was instrumental in manifesting it. This is not to say that people who do bad things or cause accidents should not stand trial for their offences. The Lords of Karma always see to it that both people who are involved in an unfortunate incident have a related karmic debt to repay, although not necessarily to each other. As long as both parties reap the appropriate effects it matters not whether their original transgressions were against each other. Karma is usually played out on the same stage as the original transgressions occurred, i.e. physical crimes usually result in physical punishments. But supposing a Nazi murdered a hundred Jews in World War II, there would be no point in him being murdered in a hundred different lifetimes. In this sort of situation some of the bad karma would need to be worked out between incarnations – in hell (the lowest sub plane of the emotional world). It is not just serious offences such as theft, violence or murder that generate bad karma, even small things like a harsh word or a judgmental thought generate negative energy which contributes to the contamination of the subtle realms. You might not think that one bad thought would have much effect, but think how many negative or harmful thoughts you have each day, multiply it by several billion and you have some idea of the amount of negative energy we put out into the world each and every day! This negative energy accumulates and can manifest itself as hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, floods, plagues, earthquakes, etc. This is known as collective karma because it applies to an entire town, region, country or planet. The effects of collective karma are sometimes allocated individually so that diseases, afflictions or "accidents" can be the result of our allotted portion of mankind's collective karma. Animals are subject to collective karma but not individual karma because they don't have individual souls. They are subject to the collective karma of all the monads in their group soul and of the animal kingdom in general. Karma is not justice for justice's sake, and it is not necessarily "an eye for an eye". Karma provides situations that will best help us to learn from our mistakes. This may involve experiencing the other side of our original transgression, e.g. a racist white person may be black in their next incarnation, or it may be seemingly unrelated. It is impossible for us to understand the intricacies of karma because it is controlled by intelligences that are far superior to us. Karma is managed by three hierarchic groups of highly developed cosmic beings who record every thought, emotion, word and action that occurs within their respective sphere of responsibility, the Lipika Lords (Lipika is Sanskrit for scribe). The best way to deal with bad karma is to accept our fate and let it work itself out. We should accept the hand that life deals us and go with the flow, because if we resist life and try to wriggle out of our karma we will only make matters worse in the long run. Karma will always catch up with us, and when it does we will have incurred an extra penalty for trying to escape. It is a bit like a prisoner who gets caught trying to break out of jail – he is sure to have his sentence increased. Please don't confuse accepting karma with fatalism, i.e. don't see everything as pre-ordained and give up at the slightest obstacle. We need to use our intuition to guide us when to stand up for ourselves and when to just accept things as they are. If we are honest with ourselves and put our egos to one side we will know. Our egos don't like 72 giving in and accepting the consequences when we can see a way out, but we have to show our egos that we are bigger and braver than they are. There is a way that we can not only avoid incurring more bad karma but actually free ourselves from the debts we have already incurred, and that is through a life of service – putting the needs of others before our own. Living with less concern for individuality and more concern for unity shows that we are evolving and the Lords of Karma will show us some grace. A little self sacrifice now will save us a lot of suffering in the future. Flagellants believe that mistreating their physical bodies pays off karma and pleases god, but they couldn't be more wrong. Rather than working off their karmic debt they are actually generating more bad karma because they are causing suffering to another living being (the physical being). Flagellants often reincarnate with the physical defects that they themselves caused in their previous life. For example, those who drag themselves around on the floor and refuse to use their legs may be born with a physical disability or be paralyzed in their next life. Karma is only made good by bearing the trials of life in an honourable and acceptable way. Bad karma can affect our physical lives in a variety of ways, including disease, disability, ugliness, abuse, miscarriages of justice, lack of intelligence, poverty, low social standing, etc. We should never blame our parents for a disease or disability that we inherited from them because our own karma and destiny determine such matters. Children should never say to their parents "I didn't ask to be born", because they did – no one is forced to incarnate against their will. Whilst it is generally true that those who suffer deserve to suffer, it is a great mistake to think that we should not show compassion and help them out. We must do everything we can to alleviate all suffering because every good deed contributes to a better world for everyone. Relieving another person's suffering not only helps them; it generates good karma for us and sends out good vibrations into the world. Sitting back and letting people suffer is selfish and vindictive, and will result in bad karma. This does not mean that we should give to every beggar who asks us for money, because many of them will spend the money on drugs or alcohol. We need to let our intuition guide us to help only those people who are willing to help themselves. We all make mistakes and do stupid things from time to time – even enlightened people. These out of character aberrations are the karmic effects of their action from previous incarnations. We must all clear our karmic debt before we graduate from the human kingdom, so it is not uncommon for highly placed people to have difficult lives or suffer from ill health. We must continue to reincarnate in the human kingdom until our karmic debt has been fully repaid, which shows we have learnt all the lessons karma had to teach us in this kingdom. We enter the fifth kingdom with a clean karmic slate but we do not escape the law of karma because it applies to every being in existence. The effects of karma in the higher kingdoms are far more subtle than they are in the human kingdom because there is no suffering (as we see it) in the higher kingdoms – that alone should be sufficient motivation for us to actively begin working at our own evolution. You might have heard the phrase "like attracts like" sums up the law of attraction. Our minds are like magnets that attract whatever we give our continued attention to. Everything that comes into our lives is attracted by the thoughts and images we hold in our minds. Our thoughts influence our lives, so whatever we think about most will eventually manifest. It doesn't matter whether our thoughts are positive, negative or neutral; the law of attraction operates blindly and will respond to them. However, the law of attraction can be strengthened, weakened or postponed by laws of karma and destiny, so not everyone who dreams of winning a raffle or becoming a rock star will achieve success. 73 The law of attraction is currently being exploited as a "get rich quick scheme" or a means of "manifesting your desires". We always get what we wish for, although usually not as soon as we would like or quite as we expected. Every granted wish must be paid for out of our reserve of merit (good karma); otherwise it will add to our already large karmic debt. This consequence is overlooked by the ignorant advocates of "cosmic ordering" and the like. Yes it works, but it can be compared to spending all your wages in one day when the money needs to last you all month! Make use of the law of attraction by all means, but don't misuse it. The best way to utilise this law of attraction is to adopt a positive outlook and just allow life to unfold naturally – trust life rather than resisting it. Don't dwell on your past mistakes or worry about what might happen in the future because that will attract negativity into your life. When you are unconcerned about what life deals you, you will probably find that you achieve success effortlessly. Nobody needs anything in abundance (in excess), we only need a sufficient amount – anything more is greedy and wasteful. The Earth's resources are incapable of providing everyone with an abundant life but they are capable of providing everyone with a sufficient life, so it is up to those who have a lot to share their wealth to those who only have a little. Thankfully many humanitarians and philanthropists are doing just that. Remember this: The universe gives you everything you NEED, but you have to pay for everything you WANT. A stroy as told by Swami Vivekanada would be of relevance here to conclude. A saint by name Kaushik was sitting in the forest under a tree meditating deeply. A bird on the branches above was making noise which is natural for a bird. The sage Kaushik got disturbed from his meditation and with anger he looked at the bird with scorching eyes. The very angry looks burnt the bird and it fell dead on the ground. Kaushik though felt sorry for the bird, on the other hand he was surprised at his power to burn the bird he acquired through the meditation and was very proud too of this! As his meditation got disturbed he found that he was hungry. He walked to a nearby house to ask for food and stood in front of the house and asked for food. It was the tradition in those days that it is the responsibility of the society to take care of the needs of a student and a spiritual seeker engaged in meditation. But they were supposed to ask in humility and not in arrogance. When he stood in front of a house and asked for food the house wife came with all respect and wanted to take care of the saint at the door steps. But she found at the same time her husband also walks in and she invariably had to take care of his immediate needs as a devout wife. She therefore apologized to the saint saying, “Sir, I would like to take care of you. Please give me some time and wait for about ten minutes. Let me take care of my husband and come back to attend to you”. With these words Kaushik felt irritated, “how can she neglect me in front of her ordinary husband when a great yogi like him who accomplished a great power is standing there. But he controlled himself for the time being and waited. On top of all this she took little more time than he expected. When she came out she sincerely apologized saying, “I am sorry I made you to wait”. But his anger did not subside. She apologized repeatedly. But the arrogance did not allow him to act with compassion. When she found he did not cool down in spite of her repeated requests and also saying that it was not intentional and she could not help the situation, she said, “oh sir, come on give up the angry looks,” and she further added, “I am not the bird to fall prey to your anger like the bird in the forest”. 74 He was shocked to hear from her about the bird being burnt because he never expected that anyone would know about an incident that happened between him and the bird in the forest where no other person was there. How could he believe she knew about it? How could she know if she does not have any yogic powers? He felt her power must be greater than the power he has to burn a bird just by the heat rays from his angry looks. The moment he realized that she is extra ordinary at once he fell at her feet and prayed her to pardon his ignorance and requested her to tell what kind of yogic practices she do to acquire such great powers. She simply smiled and said, “I don’t do any spiritual practices and all that I do is to do my household activity diligently and meticulously”. But he could not believe that and thought she is hiding about her yogic practices. She in turn replied, “If you want any more information please go to my guru, his name is Dharma vyaadha and he is in the next town, and find out the secret from him”. Kaushik then proceeded to the town in search of the guru she had referred to him. Expecting to see a great spiritual teacher may be having an ashram or a place like that, he looked around in the center of the town. To his surprise he saw no ashram or no sign board of a spiritual master around there but to his surprise he found a butcher shop with the sign board saying ‘Dharmavyaadha meat shop’. He thought it can not be because he was expecting to see a pious man and not a meat selling person. As he was hesitating standing there the person in the shop called him, ‘hi gentle man, aren’t you Kaushik and aren’t you the person the lay next village suggested you to meet me. I am the Dharmavyaadha you are looking for.’ Kaushik was totally dumb founded as to how could he know what happened between him and the lady next town. But he could not do anything. He remained as a mute spectator as he found to his surprise the guru was cutting meat and selling meat and collecting money and fighting with them for the money! After he finished the work in the shop he counted all the money and took Kaushik with him to his home. There he took care of his parents joyfully and at the end he asked him, ‘Yes gentle man, what I can do for you?’ having seen all the work he was doing yet having such great wisdom, he was now totally surprised and asked him ‘sir, what is the special sadhana or spiritual practice you do so that you are such a great master. Dharmavyaadha replied humbly, ‘all that I do is to do all the duties that I am supposed to do diligently. That is my meditation’. The moral of the story is that when we are doing the normal day to day work with dedication, then the work itself is no inferior to the highest spiritual sadhana. The question now is about the attitude, which can transform whatever activities we do into sadhana or spiritual practices! ******************* 75 Chapter 16 : Is there a God out there? This is one of the questions for which we have no concrete answer. Some say ‘Yes’, some say “No” and some say “I don’t know”. But in fact we are all puzzled by the uncertainties in our life and why talk of life only, the uncertainties in nature is also sometimes frightening. Some attribute it to the actions by the enlightened human race, but it could not be true since we the human race only constitute a negligible percentage of the total number of living beings, the count of which could never be done with all the prevailing advances in modern technology. We have only seen the tip of the iceberg as far as Science is concerned and trying to generalise on such a small data available and coming to conclusions is totally unscientific. Then to answer the question whether God is there, there can only be hypotheses. This Universe is the God which includes what is known and what is unknown. And a miniaturized form of the universe is present in every one of the living beings. How do you test the presence of a God in a being? The simple answer is God introduce the concept of mobility in any living being. Any being which has the power of mobility is a living being and this includes all from ant to elephant and may other living beings beyond our scope of our vision like bacteria on the smaller side and and on the bigger side the Earth itself. We can only a see an insignificant portion of the earth with our naked eyes. Is it not? And that is the very reason why we cannot see God which is the universe itself all encompassing everything that is there. It is very similar to an ant sitting on an elephant and the ant cannot see the elephant as a whole. We can only feel the presence of God though we cannot see the God just like Electricity which we cannot see, but feel the presence of. Now let us look at the job of the God which is sustenance of this Universe which is Himself. And to achieve this he manifests Himself in different forms while being in each of them a model of Himself to sustain the model of the living being. That is why almost all of the 100% of our inner mechanisms are controlled by the God within us and we have no control of them. For example any disease is cured by itself, all wounds are healed by itself and the food we take are digested and assimilated into the system by itself. And the growth of a child in the womb is fully controlled by the God himself for maintaing the cycle of creation and recreation. And the food we take is provided by God Himself for free by an automated process of growth and re-growth of the things required for the sustenance of every living being. In short God is very similar to a Managing Director of this Universe. He has to run and supervise the different departments and for this he manifests himself as the managers and the working staff. And naturally there will be different types of jobs to be carried out like production, maintenance, distribution, man management, research etc. and for these departments to be well run, He makes appropriate models of Himself and be inside those living objects to carry out the different functions of running and maintain this universe. Have you heard of Aquinas Five Ways in connection with his proof of existence of God? 1. The unmoved mover argument asserts that, from our experience of motion in the universe (motion being the transition from potentiality to actuality) we can see that there must have been an initial mover. Aquinas argued that whatever is in motion must be put in motion by another thing, so there must be an unmoved mover. 2. Aquinas' argument from first cause started with the premise that it is impossible for a being to cause itself (because it would have to exist before it caused itself) and that it is impossible for there to be an infinite chain of causes, which would result in infinite regress. Therefore, there must be a first cause, itself uncaused. 76 3. All beings are contingent, meaning that it is possible for them not to exist. Aquinas argued that if everything can possibly not exist, there must have been a time when nothing existed; as things exist now, there must exist a being with necessary existence, regarded as God. 4. Aquinas argued from degree, considering the occurrence of degrees of goodness. He believed that things which are called good, must be called good in relation to a standard of good—a maximum. There must be a maximum goodness that which causes all goodness. 5. The teleological argument asserts the view that things without intelligence are ordered towards a purpose. Aquinas argued that unintelligent objects cannot be ordered unless they are done so by an intelligent being, which means that there must be an intelligent being to move objects to their ends: God You must by now be wondering why this topic is being included in a book on Astrology related subjects and its relevance to life. One of the primary things which my clients desire to know from astrological consultations is why they are not successful in life when compared to their peers such as their neighbours or colleagues at work or their acquaintances. In this connection knowledge of the concept of God will come in very handy to understand the answer to such questions. God in his creations has introduced variety and that is why no two living beings are identical in nature and that is why no two horoscopes are of identical strength or potency. Even the definitions of various faculties in life are different from person to person as is illustrated in one of the earlier chapter titled “Definitions in astrology” like the concept of wealth, health, beauty, happiness, marital bliss etc. And another question generally people put to me is how can they be possible to be like their peers and and what remedies can be taken to achieve such equalities. I normally tell them that the God wants us to be different and he will never permit two living beings identical in all respects. Like in a drama, there must be a King, queen, soldiers who are experts in use of different type of arms, cooks who have different culinary expertise, servants, patients, doctors and each one of them have to do their part or role well to make the drama a success. That is why Shakespeare has written “The world is a stage and we are all actors playing our roles”. So if somebody has a role of a cook and if he is unhappy for not being given the role of a King, it is a foolish thought. Is it not? And the same thing happens with life too. It is wrong to compare yourself with someone else and it is not in God’s interests that there are two identical living beings and therefore you cannot be like anyone else. Each of one us have our own purposes in life which will invariably be different from one another. Variety is the spice of life from crade to grave. In my scientific evaluation of horoscopes, I have never found two people having the same strengths for all the houses. They are always invariably different and how they enjoy the strength is also very different depending upon individual tastes and as appropriate to the type of assignments given to them by God. When the assignment given to you is completed, you are called back to His abode or get merged into Himself and when God has a reason to send you for another assignment, he will manifest himself in you in your new creation as another living being. You never have an identity of your own and you are always a servant to God with His own miniaturised manifestation in yourself. Readers will do well to understand these concepts and you will have the best of life in this world without having any need to rejoice or feel depressed or be unhappy about your life on Earth. You just understand that you are carrying out the duties assigned to you by God and the results of which are only going to be in His interests and not yours. You are just a screw driver and it is God who uses you as He deems fit. At this point I wish to share a story with all of you. 77 "Two travelling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion’s guest room. Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, “Things aren’t always what they seem.” The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused. The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die. “Things aren’t always what they seem,” the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn’t find it.” “Then last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the cow instead. Things aren’t always what they seem.” Sometimes that is exactly what happens when things don’t turn out the way they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust that every out-come is always to your advantage. You just might not know it until sometime later…" It is therefore imperative that we use our intelligence and understand what is happening around us well. To illustrate this, read the following. I am now reminded of a story from the Panchatantra, a book illustrating general principles of behaviour and morals to be learned for successful living. Once a rich couple had a cute looking baby and they loved him very much and game him all comforts. However due to some sudden illness the baby died a premature death and the body was taken to the cremation ground just around the twilight evening. A vulture then approached them and told them that it is soon going to be night and during night this place was the play ground of ghosts, evil spirits etc. and it is better that you return home soon since the baby was anyway dead and why should they also die at the hands of evil spirits. Suddenly a fox from nearby bush jumped in and told that the vulture is telling a lie and that in fact that day was very bad and the night will be very good and there is all possibility that the baby will come alive during night. So do not leave the body of the baby there and allow wild animals to make a meal of it. The teacher who told this story in the class asked the students. "Raise the hands of all those who agree with the vulture". Many hands were raised. And then the teacher asked to do the same to those who agree with the Fox. So the hands of all others were raised. None realised nor told that both were acting in their own selfish interests. If the parents had left immediately, the vulture could make a meal of it since it cannot see in the night and if the parents stayed and left later, the Fox would have made a meal of it. Generally people who give you free advice are very similar to these vultures and foxes making use of the situation for their selfish interests and never do they bother about you. 78 I do wish you all well and the self realization that you are nothing but a small manifestation of God himself, the Supreme Commander of this Universe and without you God is nonexistent. Do your job well and God will be doing his job also well. ************* 79 Chapter 17 : Comparison of Lord Rama,Lord Krishna and Lord Buddha's Horoscopes Lord Vishnu took ten avatars or incarnations in order to protect the world through the different Yugas or eons. Out of these ten avatars, Sri Rama avatar and Sri Krishna avatar have gained maximum importance, thanks to the emergence of the most popular epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata written by Sage Valmiki and Sage Vyasa respectively. This article will help you to compare your strength of houses and planets with that of divinities incarnated as humans and evaluate yourselves. Though Sri Rama and Sri Krishna were essentially the same, since they were Lord Vishnu Himself in different bodies, we can still see a lot of difference in their personality and characters and the lives they spent as human beings. Both had definite assignments to carry out on Earth and once that purpose was served, they left the mundane world as is usual with any other human being. The main purpose of the Rama avatar was to destroy Ravana, the Asura (Demon) King, while the principal aim of Krishna's avatar was to convey the supreme message of the Bhagavad Gita, to vanquish evil and bring back justice and righteousness to humankind. Here's a sketch of avatars, Rama and Krishna, and a comparative study between these two avatars. The story of Rama inspires awe and devotion in the Indian subcontinent. The word 'Ram' or 'Rama' is very commonly used among Indians. 'Ram Ram' is a greeting used mostly in North India. The phrase, "Ram Nam Satya Hai" (Ram is the ultimate truth) is chanted by a procession carrying a dead man on his last journey. 'Hey Ram' was the famous expression uttered by Mahatma Gandhi before he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. Such is the respect and devotion shown towards this Hindu deity. Shri Krishna, the ninth avatara of Vishnu, is as popular, if not more, than Rama. While the word 'Rama' is used more than Krishna, there are many more Krishna temples and religious sects in India. Shri Krishna is worshipped as a major deity among the Vaishnavites (followers of Vishnu). He is regarded as the Supreme One by the Gaudiya Vaishnava sect. Krishna's stories are entertaining and span His whole life, right from infancy to adulthood. All these stories, however, contain a deep, spiritual inner meaning. Lord Krishna's mission was to deliver the Bhagavad Gita and thereby emerge as a Supreme philosophical teacher to mankind. The Krishna Avatar is regarded as the Sampoorna (complete) avatar, as he has the sixteen necessary kalas or distinctive traits. Rama is not regarded as such, as he shared these qualities with his brothers. Krishna is never shown praying to any God - He is deemed to be beyond all Gods and gunas (qualities). Rama prayed to the Surya Devata (Sun God), as He was the descendant of the Raghu dynasty. Krishna's life is filled with stories of dalliances with the Gopis (cowherd women), but the love they had for each other had been absolutely pure and transcended all barriers and human limitations. The scientist of I-SERVE claims that they zeroed down on Lord Rama`s birth date by studying planetary positions as described by Sage Valmiki in the Ramayana. In Bhagavata, tenth skanda, third chapter, it is said that Krishna was born when the Moon was in the constellation of Prajapathi, i.e., Rohini. By a careful study of the 26th sloka of first chapter, fifth amsa of Vishnupurana, it can be construed that Krishna was born on the night of Krishnashtami (8th day of dark half) in the lunar month of Sravana. Information furnished in Harivanua (1 Part, 52nd chapter) is clear and to the point so far as the lunar day, month and time are concerned. It is said that Krishna was born on the 8th lunar day of the dark half of Sravana, in the constellation of Rohini at midnight. 80 In this article, I am trying to evaluate their horoscopes mathematically using scientific evaluation techniques. Planetary Dispositions of both horoscopes: Lord Rama Mercury is the only malefic planet in Lord Rama’s horoscope and naturally he did not excel much in its significations. Lord Krishna on the other hand, had only Mars as a malefic and he never took any lead in any of the courageous endeavours. He was always in the background manipulating things and getting it done by others. Epics have innumerable examples of such instances. Lord Krishna Life is dependent on the 9 planets of astrology and their behaviour and these planets gives good, bad and neutral(lifeless) results to the activities of the native during his life time. Free will is exercised during the neutral effects of planets and the resultant effects are carried over to the next life as Good or Bad as the case may be. 81 If you compare the two planetary dispositions the net Good% of influences is more in case of Krishna with 44% while Rama had it only with just half of it at 22.23%. However the Bad% were more or less equal in both cases with around 11%. You can also individually compare the strength and nature of individual planets too. You must be wondering what is the use of making such comparisons. When you evaluate your horoscope scientifically, you can use the strengths of Rama and Krishna as a measuring yard and position yourself accordingly as humans. These planetary disposition influences the 12 houses of a horoscope and the strengths or potency of the houses can be worked out and we can understand the success factor of matters signified by each house which will be very helpful in planning our lives. Now let us look at the strength of houses of Lord Rama’s horoscope which is given below. So let us now look at the 3rd house. He had a poor strength of 37.43% and he had no brothers or sisters born of his own mother. Though he had brothers born out of his step mothers, he could hardly live with them except Lakshmana. So his benefits on account of co-borns were nothing much to laud about. If you closely look at his life as illustrated in Ramayana, he was often showing lack of confidence and he was not very aggressive in his behaviour. So the poor strength of the third house was more or less justified. Now look at the 7th house, the marital bliss. He had all sorts of problems with his wife and most of the time he had to live without her even when she was abducted and later he had to throw her into the forest for fear of the public. We know all these were manipulated by God, but as a human being he did not much enjoy marital bliss. So the poor strength of the 7th house is justified with 39.81%. Same is the case with 8th house when he had to face many hardships and distresses in life which is indicated by its 39.36% of the strength. He has been travelling around the forest crying out for his missing wife. Even the poor 12th house was well reflected in his life as a human being. He had nothing much of the significations of the 12th house to his advantage. It all shows that the strength of houses of a horoscope has some truth in life even when he is a God incarnate. And so you can use the strength of your own horoscopes to know beforehand how your houses are going to behave later in life. I am now giving below the strength of houses of Lord Krishna using his planetary dispositions as at the time of his birth. You can try to evaluate them. Lord Krishna’s horoscope had strength far greater than Lord Rama and He is the role model of many in Hindu religion and even among people of other religions. The above article though written with a touch of humour is awakening in the concepts of astrology and how one can use the mathematical evaluation of a horoscope to your advantage. The horoscope of Lord Krishna seems to be a far better one than Lord Rama and given an option one would definitely prefer to have his horoscope similar to that of Krishna. Remember that Krishna switched his life to Dwaraka in Gujarat and no wonder that state headed by Modi there reached the top in business and per capita happiness whereas Ayodhya (UP) where Rama ruled is going down day by day. The best method to evaluate his horoscope is to compare it with that of Narendra Modi and Hitler's horoscope which are given in separate chapters in this book. 87 Yes, his Marks Given by Public or Aaroodha Strength is almost 63% more than his actual self realised strength of 45.15% and no wonder he is a good politician and a leader of People. Otherwise he is a very ordinary person like anyone of us, a good family man. His best houses are the 7th and 8th houses. What these houses signify is given in my articles "AstrologyA New version". The weakest house is the 11th one, returns from his career/profession is not in conformity with the amount of work he does. He will be well justified in asking for a raise. **************** 88 Chapter 19 : Evaluation of Hitler’s Horoscope I recently had the chance of looking at Hitler's horoscope based on his birth details available from the internet as given below. Malefic planets when they are strong reduce the bad effects in proportion to the strength. 3. Weak malefic planets are always bad and can give one a lot of problems. And when his time was good he could commandeer his regime well and start the world war II with a good intention of bringing Germany into global supremacy. If you study his strength of the houses, it is very clear he was a man gifted by God and he had no bad intentions to annihilate millions of people. However during the world war he was convinced and acted according to his conscience directed by God to create such a huge holocaust which probably was God's intention and he was only an instrument in His hands. He was definitely never a mad man or a psychopath as per his horoscope. Yogas : He had many good combinations in his horoscope like Hamsa Yoga, Soola yoga, Sarala yoga, Trilochana yoga, Gaja Kesari yoga, Rajayoga, Vipareetha Raja yoga which he fully utilised in his life and Daridra Yoga due to which he could not enjoy his life with a family around. I hope this article will be of use to Astrology students. Comments from a reader : Adolf Hitler's horoscope analysis was very fascinating to read. If you remember, I had said that i'd be surprised if all people in top 1 percentile were saints. Hitler's horoscope makes me wonder even more. You said Hitler was no madman, and it was as if his actions were guided by God. Paramhansa Yogananda also inferred to this, that persecution of Jews was in turn a karmic result of their persecution of Jesus Christ. It was because Jews persecuted Jesus that they had to face trials during WWII. It’s all so fascinating to read all these things. According to online sources, Hitler himself never killed anyone in his life! ****************** 91 Chapter 20: Horoscope of India as per Mundane Astrology I am giving below the Scientific Evaluation and analysis of the horoscope of India based on the time of birth 15 August 1947 00:00 a.m. as per the axioms of mundane astrology. 92 Signification of Houses in Mundane Astrology : First House : The general conditions of the country as a whole, people and their general outlook, state of law and order, public health, government, reputation, valor and its position in the world. Let us wait and see. ******************* 95 Chapter 21 : Horoscope Evaluation of Narendra Modi, the present PM of India I am giving below Narendra Modi's Scientific Evaluation of Horoscope as illustrated in my earlier articles. I have got the details from the internet which data was consistent on the many pages devoted for this purpose. As you will observe, the only house with a respectable strength is the 12th house which shows that he will not waste his money, assets etc. for unproductive purposes. And he is a spiritually learned person who will never harm others and thinks of himself as a tool in the service of God. Yes, he has an Aaroodha strength of almost double the real strength of what he feels himself about him and this means that others consider very high of him and that could be the reason he has been elected to be the Prime Minister of India. 97 The almost exact nearness of his Real Strength and Naked strength shows that his life will not undergo much fluctuation from birth to death from his own point of view. However due to transitory influences of planets, he could have much better times in life like his present period. I am giving below the transitory effect of his horoscope as on 10 Feb 2015 which shows the reason why he fared so well in elections and he is now holding a Prime post in Indian politics. It will mostly depend on a high Aaroodha strength which is how one is viewed by others and have trust in him and look forward to his advice and leadership. He lives a very humble life and will never be a money monger and he will never misuse his resources. He is one who will always be guided by his own inspirations directly received from God Himself. May be his time of birth recorded could be wrong in which case you may discard my analysis given above. End 98 Mahadasas and Antardasas (Periods and sub periods) In my other articles on this blog, I have given how a horoscope is evaluated in terms of strength of planets and the resultant strength of houses which gives you a good indication of how potent your life is from birth to death. Have a look at the sample strength of planets in a horoscope. Assume that it is yours. Planet Strength Good% Bad% Life less Nature Net Strength Sun 20.81 84.07 8.44 7.49 Benefic 19.25 Moon 52.70 52.83 46.77 0.39 Benefic 52.50 Mars 85.66 67.37 21.48 11.16 Benefic 76.10 Mercury 39.09 11.45 76.89 11.66 Malefic 34.53 Jupiter 19.40 65.28 31.28 3.43 Benefic 18.74 Venus 100.00 35.30 45.60 19.10 Malefic 80.90 Saturn 71.32 31.42 68.58 0.00 Malefic 71.32 Rahu 63.90 65.28 31.28 3.43 Benefic 61.71 Kethu 61.33 11.45 76.89 11.66 Malefic 54.17 Net 62.07 47.16 45.25 7.59 Benefic 57.36 The general rules to evaluate a planet and its ruling period/sub periods are given below. 1. Benefic planets are always good proportionate to its strength. Mars and Rahu are such planets in this horoscope. Moon, Sun and Jupiter are also benefic though with lesser strength (Net Strength Column). 2. Malefic planets with a good strength (above 50%) reduce the bad effects in proportion to their strength and they are marked in dark red. They will sometimes act as weak benefic too. Venus, Saturn and Kethu are such planets in your horoscope. 3. Weak malefic planets are always bad and can give one lot of problems. Mercury is such a planet in this horoscope. Note that all the planets working in tandem will give you Benefic results to the extent of 57.36% in your life since the Net Good% is higher than Bad% in the above table Now that you know the strength and nature of all the planets in your horoscope, we have to know when these planets will come into effect during the course of your life. These are determined by the Mahadasas and Antardasas of your horoscope. I am giving below the details of these periods and sub periods below from 30th May 2014 to 31st May 2050. The names of planets are abbreviated to the first 3 characters. MD means Maha Dasa (Main Period). 99 Vimsottari Dasa: Vimsottari Dasa: Sat MD: 2014-05-30 - 2033-05-30 Merc MD: 2033-05-30 - 2050-05-31 Antardasas in this MD: Antardasas in this MD: Sat: 2014-05-30 - 2017-06-02 Merc: 2033-05-30 - 2035-10-30 Merc: 2017-06-02 - 2020-02-10 Ket: 2035-10-30 - 2036-10-26 Ket: 2020-02-10 - 2021-03-20 Ven: 2036-10-26 - 2039-08-27 Ven: 2021-03-20 - 2024-05-21 Sun: 2039-08-27 - 2040-06-30 Sun: 2024-05-21 - 2025-05-02 Moon: 2040-06-30 - 2041-12-01 Moon: 2025-05-02 - 2026-12-04 Mars: 2041-12-01 - 2042-11-28 Mars: 2026-12-04 - 2028-01-12 Rah: 2042-11-28 - 2045-06-15 Rah: 2028-01-12 - 2030-11-19 Jup: 2045-06-15 - 2047-09-23 Jup: 2030-11-19 - 2033-05-30 Sat: 2047-09-23 - 2050-05-31 The colour codes I have given above is dependant on the nature and strength of planets given in the Strengths of Planets report given earlier. The Mahadasa and antardasas of the sample horoscope from 2014 to 2059 is given above. As on today the 4 th Aug 2019 when this article is being written, you can find that the native is running Saturn Mahadasa from 30th May 2014 to 30 May 2033 which is a strong Malefic which will though a malefic will not do much damage since it is strong. Look at 2nd General rule to evaluate a planet given earlier. So this 19 year Period will produce good results if the native works hard. It does not mean that the whole 19 years will be similar in nature and effect. So this Mahadasa(Main Period) for 19 years are sub divided into 9 sub periods as given below the Mahadasa Period in the above table where you will find the nature and duration of these sub periods. As on 4th Aug 2019, the native will thus be running Mercury antardasa from 2 nd June 2017 to 10th Feb 2020 which is a weak Malefic resulting in bad times during this sub period of Saturn Main Period. Obviously the native will have to be very cautious during this period. The main advantage of this Mahadasa and Antardasas within is that you can identify good periods during the entire course of the Mahadasa. Here in this case the period from 4th Dec 2026 to 19th Nov 2030 is being ruled by Benefic Planets Mars and Rahu which has got first class strengths and you will be able to take life easy during this period or capitalise the goodness for productive purposes. The Main period or Mahadasa can be considered as your super boss and the sub periods as your immediate boss. If both of them are bad, you will have a miserable time. If the super boss is good, he will always protect you and if the immediate boss is good, he will not allow your shortcomings to be passed on to the super boss. If the super boss is good and the immediate boss is bad, he will give you needling problems while you will be protected by the super boss. This is the general rule of how to determine whether a period/sub period is good or bad. Of 100 course, the strength of the planet is what matters in deciding to what extent the goodness will be. Planets marked in dark red though malefic will not do much harm since they are strong. Planets marked in red are generally troublesome to the native. Mercury is such a planet in this sample horoscope. In fact every antardasa can be further subdivided into Pratyantardasas like for example, the Saturn Mahadasa and the Mercury Antardasa discussed above could be subdivided to 9 Pratyantardasa given below. Vimsottari Dasa: Sat MD: 2014-05-30 - 2033-05-30 Merc AD: 2017-06-02 - 2020-02-10 Pratyantardasas in this Mercury AD: Merc: 2017-06-02 - 2017-10-22 Ket : 2017-10-22 - 2017-12-17 Ven : 2017-12-17 - 2018-05-29 Sun : 2018-05-29 - 2018-07-18 Moon: 2018-07-18 - 2018-10-10 Mars: 2018-10-10 - 2018-12-05 Rah : 2018-12-05 - 2019-04-29 Jup : 2019-04-29 - 2019-09-11 Sat : 2019-09-11 - 2020-02-10 So, even in the Mercury Antardasa which is a weak Malefic, you do not have to be worried about it since the Pratyantardasa of Mars and Rahu are highly benefics and you will be able to do things with good results and prosperity during this weak antardasa. You can even sub divide the Pratyantardasa into 9 Sookshmadasas and each Sookshmadasa can further be subdivided into 9 Praana Antardasas and each Prana Antardasa can be sub divided into 9 Dehantardasas using the same algorithm and thus every few hours in a day can be accounted for being good, bad or ugly. I have explained the above concepts of Mahadasas and antardasas is the most popular in Vedic Astrology. And for those who are interested in the strength of houses, one can use Rasi Dasa or NarayanaDasa which is also popular among astrologers. For this purpose the evaluation of the periods will be based on the strength of houses. Narayana dasa may be said to be the most important phalita dasa. Its versatility lies in the fact that it can be computed separately for each divisional chart for precise timing of specific matters. In fact, we can compute more than one Narayana dasa for each divisional chart. Narayana dasa of D-12 seeded from the 12th lord is native-centric. It shows events in a native’s life that are related to parents. Even when looking at the events in the lives of parents, it takes the native as the reference. To see events in the lives of parents directly, we can use different seeds. Similarly, 12th house used as the seed in D24 Narayana dasa shows the learning from the point of view of one’s evolution. One can use the 4th house (formal learning) as the seed in D-24 Narayana dasa to see formal education. By using a different seed, we can examine the events related to the chosen Planet Nature Net Strength Sun Benefic 19.25 Moon Benefic 52.50 Mars Benefic 76.10 Mercury Malefic 34.53 Jupiter Benefic 18.74 Venus Malefic 80.90 Saturn Malefic 71.32 Rahu Benefic 61.71 Kethu Malefic 54.17 Net Benefic 57.36 101 divisional chart from a different angle. Readers should try to master this fantastic dasa system.
